Photographer's Note
Life is hard in the Laotian capital. Most inhabitants live in small rooms or when they are lucky in huts with mud floor. Only the tiny middle class and the reach own houses. This old man pushes his simple cart heavily loaded with imported bananas through the roads of Vientiane from market to market, hoping to sell some of his fruits to be able to buy some veggies. In the country side life is a bit easier, you can plant some veggies or go into the jungle to find edible plants. In the big city Vientiane there is no space for the poor to grow veggies, but only here they can earn a bit of money - not really enough to live decently, but too much to simply die. It is a hard world for the crowd of the underprivileged in Laos.

A fine story of daily life beautifully depicted here. All the elements hang together perfectly in this well presented image. In other so-called more progressive countries I would think it likely that the guys on the passing scooter would pinch a bunch of bananas on their way past!

Great capture of the combination and juxtaposition of modern and old type of transportation. Looks like the guy is sweating from pushing his banana cart. I hope he sold a lot of bananas to buy other food for this family. Well done, tfs.

I have no ideas about this business. I think bananas in any tropical garden are very cheap vegetables. But I don't know his merchandising plans. Simple and interesting road scene, this cart looks like a apart of bike :) It could be more amazing situation.

Hi Urs,
The pusher of this banana cart is demonstrating the Turkish saying, "I don't have time to scratch my head." Presumably scratching one's head can be done while doing something else, so to emphasize how busy one is, one claims not to have time to scratch one's head. Apart from the demonstration of a Turkish saying, I like this photo because of the various means of transport depicted.
