Photographer's Note
Reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Patuxai is Vientiane's most prominent Landmark. The name can be translated with arch, door or gate of Triumph, but unlike its Parisian namesake the Patuxai boasts four, rather than two, archways. It was built in the 1960s with US-purchased cement that was supposed to have been used for the construction of a new airport. Hence it’s sometimes called ‘the vertical runway’.

Hello Urs - I have to say that Vientiane was not my favorite place in Laos. I was struck by the grandeur of some of the buildings in comparison to some of the poverty I saw, it was also very dry and dusty. I much preferred up country places. You have presented a far nicer vision of the town than the one I came away with. Good light and a fine view of the famous landmark with the planting gardens adding a softening touch of 'nature' to the scene. Love the schoolgirls (?) uniforms too. They add some nice bright contrast. Warm regards Rosemary

Hello Urs,
At first I though this was a remnant from the French Colonial period, but reading your note I see it is somewhat later and has a rather different history behind it. I like the point of view very much, the repeating lamps make a very good lead-line whilst the traffic and pedestrians help create a bustling atmosphere. A well presented image with very good light, colours and sharpness.

Hello Urs,
This is a nice shot from the famous landmark of Vientiane. The picture is nicely composed with colourful foreground. It may amuse you to see what this street looked like 40 years ago.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello, Urs,
Somebody said me, Vientian has got a lot of blocks of typical Soviet style architecture. I see you don't show these places in the Lao capital. This is really interesting presentation of classic Buddhist style. yes, it looks like a triuph arch in the Europa. Excellent composition, eye-catching colours
Best wishes,
Serghei
Get well! How are you?

Dear Urs
'Vertical Runway'...I like the term :-) Didn't know the history behind this prominent structure of the Laotian capital.
Nice picture with daily life details in the FG...the scene is bathed in nice light!
Best Regards
