Photographer's Note

This was shot at the Buddhist High School, which was just opened in January in Luang Prabang. I met and talked with the monk who founded the school and who also teaches much of the coursework. The school itself is housed in a smaller temple and is really quite lovely inside. It seems much of what is being taught here is English and although they have few books, they do get an English language newspaper every day. Here, one of the novices plows through the paper, but his English is not strong and he has to look up most words in the Laos English dictionary on which his right hands rest. Even a simple article must take hours to read this way, but he was perservering.

Normal PP, uncropped, ISO 400

I'll throw up a very similar shot as a workshop, just a slightly different expression from the novice.
