Photographer's Note
I felt like posting this unpremeditated (!) picture instead of showing you another shot of the early morning monks processions in Luang Prabang. Looking at how some tourists almost got in their way to take a picture, I have to admit I was a bit uncomfortable taking their picture so I kept my distances but after all, I'm pleased with the result.

HI Philippe!!
A clever idea, really well done, it is as good as simple!! But you have to think of it!!
Nice conception and it is as an allegory of two worlds...If we think about the meaning of colours relating to souls feeling...are we on the wrong side???
Good one!!
Have a nice day...
Best regards

Hi Philippe,
very nice photo, many kinds of contrast in one shot. I like it because it´s so simple, right on the spot, could not have been better!

Johannes

Great ass - whoops, I mean photo! Excellent concept, it speaks volumes about two very different cultures, and such wonderful simplicity. A classic case of less being more.

Hi Philippe!
Original picture and very well seen. Like the contrast both in the colour and as the title says between east and west!

Bonjour Philippe,
Yves.

Hi Philippe.
You have got really good artistic sense. The colour contrast is great. I wonder how is this contrast understood in asian countries and what these coulours mean to them. As I remember the orange monk's suit is a sign of poverty, whereas for me (as a "western" civilisation) it means something shining.
Nevertheless, great photo which kept me thinking :-).
Best regards,
Petr.

Hi Philippe,
Perfect...what a great idea..!!!
The blue jeans against all these orange robes, your great pair of eyes did not let you down when seeing this. I like shots like these without heads, brings all forcus on the area what you want to show.
Very good and interesting work, i really like this.
Take care,
Henk

bonsoir Philippe,

Hello Philippe,
This is a very meaningful shot. I was in LP last summer and was shocked to hear about what's happening there. It's difficult, but - as I said before in reply to one of bukitgolf's pictures - if tourist behaviour gets any worse, I'd consider supporting a plain ban on photography during the morning alms. The town just can't take it, I'm afraid. Even now UNESCO is considering revoking its World Heritage status...
And this girl...well, at least she's wearing long trousers.
Great shot, a wonderful photographical idea excellently executed and a theme that's close to my heart.

Salut Philippe,

Philippe,
How did I miss both of your post from Laos? This is not a typical shot for sure, but I love the contradiction, the mixture of traditional and modern world and the culture crash. Very Creative POV and funny too.
Yes, Luang Phrabang was never the same since the country open for tourism. While the country benefit from tourist but there are much culture change, I suggest a nice long lens and a good camera to give some distance and respect, and yes many tourists are just got too aggressive with taking pictures.

hi Philippe
I like this one. It stands out strongly in your gallery.
I realized you were in Cambodia too, a few weeks after I left Siem Reap.
This is a superb POV and just the way you looked at things and compose the shot with blue on orange. It is very effective, as if you were shooting for advertisement to the brand of jeans here.
But the longer I look at this shot, I seem to feel a bit odd about the single arm here [she might be using cellphone to shoot a picture when you need only 1 hand?]. You have obviously positioned yourself very well for this low angle to crop the feet of girl and monks, as well as crop the heads of all of them.
Apart from the superb color tones of FG on the BG, I also think the body language is subtle here. Of course you have applied bokeh effect very nicely for this one.
Great work.
Greetings from Borneo.

Quite a 'cheeky' shot Philippe, but really well seen.
One thing disturbs - that white patch between her legs. Maybe you could cheat and clone some of that wonderful orange colour in there...
It's an excellent shot though - simply and elegantly done. Often, less is more.
Cheers,

Hi my TEfriend Philippe , esta foto ya la pude contemplar en otro momento , sin tiempo para comentarla y ahora no he resistido la tentacion.
Bonitos pantalones !!

Hi, Philippe,
This is a stunningly clever composition. I first viewed it a few days ago (when I looked at parts of your portfolio after you critiqued one of my shots). The image has stuck in my mind since, which is really remarkable given how many things I am thinking about.
What do I like about this photo?
1) The message is powerful and obvious, and yet subtle enough that the viewer gets an "aha" moment in the realization.
2) That the colors in the composition make for a delightful contrast that is visually appealing.
3) That you have used depth of field superbly in adding to the dichotomy you are expressing.
I can imagine seeing such a scene. I might imagine being technically skilled enough to photograph it well, as you have done. But I have difficulty imagining that I would have the visual creative cleverness to see this as you have done!
Kudos,
- William

Bonjour Philippe
I love it!!
