Photographer's Note

I have now arrived in Usuki, Oita. A small town on Kyush island. The town is mostly famous for the stone buddha statues here. They are considered a national treasure, and the locals are very proud of them. They are considered to be some of the oldest in Japan. They are allso the first national treassure in Kyushu. The stone buddhas date back to the 12th century.

Usuki is allso known for beeing the place where William Adams landed in April 1600, after some 19 months at sea. William Adams is the historical person that James Clavell based the character John Blackthorn on for the book "Shogun." When William Adams landed here the town was known as Bungo.
