Photographer's Note

Specially for my friends Henk and Luis who didn’t like my yesterday’s photo of 3 geishas taken from behind, here’s a different one, with a close-up of their enigmatic face.

Like I previously mentionned in my other maikos and geishas photos, an encounter with these living tradition and culture is really intimidating, in part because they are very discret and the exchange with them is at minimum, mostly with head nodding and gentle smiles.

When I’ve met these geishas in a back alley, a man who seems to be their customer was taking pictures of them, so I’ve look at the scene for 5 minutes, hoping to get an opportunity to shoot them myself. They kindly accepted but were surprised when they saw me getting closer for a portrait cropping.
