Photographer's Note
Harajuku, Tokyo is a photographers haven. I wasn't expecting it as we just came across it (and then I learned about it later). Every Sunday, youthful people go to the Harajuku district and work on eachother's makeup and outfits- and then just hang out all day while people flock to take their photographs. I found it all pretty strange- at first I thought it was rude that so many people were pushing their way in to take these peoples' photos. I even tried asking one person if it was ok to take their photo, and they just ignored me. So eventually I just led myself to believe that these people were here to be seen by the public, and started shooting. Still though, I was a non-invasive distance away with my 80-400mm lens (I'm too shy). I really liked this girl's contacts she was wearing. The girl sitting next to her was also very creative- she had her face partly covered with small pieces of tin foil.
It's a great place to practice people shots- even if you are shy like me!

Hi Leslie. I like this portrait and it's ecentric looking subject. I always find it interesting to see the getups of these young ladies in Japan and the length they go to to creat "a look". I think this one could have been improved had you not cropped the bottom so much. But still an eye catcher.

Wow! Crazy people! This is a great portrait though. The thing I love about Japanese 'street culture' is that it has it's own identity. So many countries try to emulate the US but the Japanese also have their own culture and ways and are proud of it! Great.

I was surprised when I saw the thumbnails and I opened with curiosity! Great portrait and such a make up! You used a zoom but the quality of the picture is really good. I like the framing also. And such zoom helps to have people natural on the picture, like that girl. Very good note to explain it. Congrat!

The bluish right eye reminds me of Marilyn Manson and the spike dog necklace brings back memories of British punk fashion from the 70’s It’s a great colorful shot.
Bravo Leslie

She's like the female Marion Manson. I love seeing photos of the Japanese punks and this is a very interesting one. One thing I do notice is that there is a halo around the girl. Did you do some contrast masking on this? That is what it appears to me, and I think you might want to reduce the opacity of the CM layer.
Good to see you on TE Leslie.

Although the chain intersecting the girls head breaks some basic rules of photography it actually adds to the bizarre subject in a way especially since the rest of the background is not intrusive. I used to live about 10 minutes from there and now somewhat regret not spending more Sundays there with my camera. Harajuku is definitely a photographers mecca.

Wow, a very striking shot indeed! I just noticed how the colors of her two fingernails matched that of her eyes. It is true though how radical the fashion in Japan can get...especially if you walk down Harajuku area! Great capture!
Cheers,
Mayumi

That is a very good portrait! Maybe not so simetric (one eye is blue, other eye is black, one nail is white, other nail is black), but, wow, what I could expect? This is Harajuku, and in Harajuku everything is allowed :-) !

a great shot of contrast and assymetry. even with the contact, the piercing, and the spikes you can see the babyface of this girl underneath. i also like the chain in the bg. tfs

Really nice portrait!
This girl looks so very intresting. I like the expression on her face on the two different colours of her eyes.

A great TE shot, Leslie. Both your photo and your note are excellent. The girl's different coloured eyes are very striking - as is the piercing on her lip. Great DOF - making the background less distracting. Well seen.

Hi Leslie,
Thanks for yor positive feedback on my waters.
I discovered your photo allready sometime ago but never gave it points. It is a lot of work every day to look trough all.
I should like to use it for a project on the art academy Willem de Kooning, is that OK?
Have a look at my artsite hboot.nl
