Photographer's Note
I mentioned my visit to Yudanaka, or at least some aspects of it, in my last post. The reason why people travel to Yudanaka are, first of all, the monkeys of Jigokudani. I uploaded my best photo from that location long time ago so that’s enough, especially that there are so many better ones on TE, like this amazing image by Takero. I didn’t take photos like that because I went to Yudanaka at the wrong time of year – the snow was gone and the snow monkeys were not SNOW monkeys anymore… they changed into a bit less attractive “dry and sunny weather monkeys”. I’m sure you know what I’m trying to say… ;-)
Another tourist attraction near Yudanaka is Shiga Kogen, the site of many events of the Nagano Winter Olympics 1998. After a short cable car ride I was transported from bland early spring to a Winter Wonderland zone full of snow, icicles and skiers.
I got away with uploading shots of abstract landscape and bathroom footwear last two times so I’m going to try my luck once again…
I took this photo through the window in a café adjacent to the cable car station. The out of focus shapes in the background are the mountains and I’m afraid there is not much of a story here, other than I got some funny looks while standing, indoors, with a tripod and photographing a view that was not visible.
Please also have a look at the two “normal” photos in WS. All three, like all my other images from Japan, have been scanned from Fuji Velvia slide film.

Hello Kasia,
Wonderfully presented in blue and white.
Nature as an artist!
In the WS, we can see that a lot of snow has fallen.
If I remember well, some areas in Japan experience extreme amounts of precipitation with snow.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Kasia, the pics in the WS aren't normal for me,it's 40 years that i can see the ice candles in my village,so this is a great surprise and a memory of when i was young and the planet too cold..ehee..but the main pic is a masterwork, nice idea but the best quality of details first, absolutely amazing! Have a nice week and thanks,Luciano

Hi Kasia
this one made me laugh bc I can completely relate to what you're talking about...using a tripod indoors, shooting through a window that you can't see through...hilarious! and I like your comment about Dry and sunny weather monkeys haha. excellent main post, something different for sure. Ice and snow crystals are always fun to view up close like this. good one! cheers

Pozdrawiam serdecznie

Hello Kasia,
Three very different aspects of the effects of cold weather are detailed here.
This is the arty aspect. The ice crystals look like lace over a silk b/g. Beautiful! (When we were young, long before central heating was common, we used to wake up top scenes like this, in winter.. The ice crystals would cover the windows, the temperature controlling how thick the ice would be. These conditions were also linked, I remember, to exhaled your breath becoming visible and we used to pretend we were smoking!)
Your w/s show different effects of the cold weather, the long icicles, the deep snow and, of course, how we use this for sport.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Kasia,
You really show us the most original photos from Japan, very different from what I would expect most European visitors to that country to post. Maybe this doesn't say as much about Japan as last upload's bathroom slippers - you could perhaps have found something similar in Abisko - but you had a brilliant idea and carried it out perfectly without allowing yourself to be disturbed by funny looks. The WS photos are certainly more normal, looking more like the winters of my childhood.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Kasia,
The frost looks amazing and is a true work of art with fantastic patterns and shapes. I really like the many bluish colours as well. You captured it so well with excellent sharpness.

Hi Kasia
A wonderfully observed composition the frosted glass working wonderfully providing one with an abstract image. Photography is an art form as you so ably illustrate with this image. But I'm not sure if this needs white correction as it appears a bit blueish on my screen! Excellent close up and your good supporting additional pics.
Best regards

Ciao Kasia
non so se le formazioni del ghiaccio siano le stesse in tutto il mondo, di sicuro questa è una foto molto originale dal Giappone, è quello che non ti aspetti.

Hi Kasia,
Lovely shot of a frosty glass. There's so many tiny details and focus has to be just right for success like this. Also background has very chilly feeling with so many tones of cool blue.

Hi dear Kasia
So great Winter image at all! You were quite
unortune not to see snow monkeys there but instead you did get so fantatsic image as such. I think you took this shot at Hoppo station, where I frequently went skiing at my school age. If you still want to take shots for real snow monekys, you had better go there around 20 Dec. because not so many tourists but already there are snow, just for your advice.
All the best and have a good day! Takero

Hello Kasia
Windows with ice flowers or raindrops are always a rewarding subject. I always make two impressions. One with the focus on the ice flowers and the water droplets and one with the background in focus as seen through a vague foreground.
The faint blue background fits perfectly with this cold photo.
Well done
Have a good weekend, groet Rob

Hello Kasia
I was fascinated with the patterns formed on frosted windows when I first went to Korea. It rarely falls below -2c in Brisbane, and such scenes are rare in sub tropical Queensland, even in elevated areas over 1000 metres where they sometimes get snow. Shock, horror! Good sharpness and lighting. Tfs!
