Photographer's Note

The Bukit, Bali's southern tip, is an arid, desert-like area. It is nothing like the lush, tropical visions of Bali that most envision.

Being as dry as it is, various forms of cactus are the most common types of plants. So common that local farmers have taken to using a form of tall prickly cactus to build fences. Supported by a few twigs and string here and there, the cactus fences make a formidable barrier for the cattle in the field.

This photo, shot on Fuji Velvia (50) captures the simple beauty of these tall, skinny, prickly cacti in the very early morning light.

The photo has been cropped to eliminate excessive shadow area at the bottom, though the colours have not been altered.
