Photographer's Note
This was taken in a sleepy little village, named Reika - At least, I think thats what it was called. I went there with a lad from Ramapir Tekro slum, where I was working. He told me thats what the place was called.
Until now, I had never been so close, for such a long period..to women whom keep their heads covered. They do this when they are around men, other than their husbands, fathers etc (not father in law, brother in law). It was quite difficult for me, as I am used to speaking with men in the same way as I would to females. Unmarried girls do not wear the veil, but it is, of course a crime not to be married at my age...
I thought this was a little dark, so I have been avoiding posting - is it ok?

Hi Kaj.
Very impressive an image from you again.
Well, this doesn't feel for me as dark...but, what I really noticed is the way you transformed the subjects well in frame. The sharp hands, and the soft face ...play a balanced proportion here...and choice of B/W is perfect here.
I think, the world needs to see such images, the true reflections of Indian women, and you have done a fantastic work.
Have a great day.

The amusing history of human civilization is encoded in that hand covering (or exposing) HER face.
Covering the face...
21st. century...!!
Significant part of the globe is dwelled by the people covering their faces...
Every event, every occurrence has its two sides…Positive and negative…
What is the positive side of THIS circumstance ?
It would be the most passionate story ever told…
If ever be told…
Great photography, Kaj.
And I mean: Photography…!!!

hello Kaj,
I have not visited your site for a while and today I remembered too and glad that i did. But this image makes me sad. if it is too dark then so it should be. That would reflect the (for me) sadness of women always having to do what the men want. Women are not allowed to see the light (metaphorically speaking) and must forever inhabit the shadows.Your picture moves me and that surely is a sign of a good photographer.

Ha... See, you can also make it in BW ;-)
Excellent composition and moment taken. In a very diffrent way the interaction between the kid and his mum, where the kid seems to be the leading character, reminds me one of my Malaysia shots involving a daughter sermoning her mother.
Like Francis wrote there's something from other times in photo, the kid is dressed like latin children on sunday mornings in the 50's.
What first appears to be a toning flaw (a kind of yellow discrepant tone) adds a feeling of a past time print exposed for too long to the sunlight, like a family photo. No problems with whatsoever darkness issues.

It's more than okay, dear Kaj, it's bloody marvelous is what it is! The attitude of the boy, his titlted head looking up at you and the way it folds into the mother's shy territory, how her hand is half lifting the veil. It is an extraordinary photograph, with just a touch of what I would call "pre-sepia" making it ageless and nostalgic all at once, and yes, there is a hint of HCB's pics from Mexico in the early 30s.
Man oh man...
YES!

This is art. Sensitive, thought provoking, and most of all, beautiful.

The focus is not that good, however the composition is striking, there is a lot of dynamism here, one diagonal leading to the boys head which sends you right on the opposite to the mother, powerful, that hand is also a spark...

Kajal, the subject you chose to present in TE is quite interesting. At times the picture does look out of focus but your POV outdo these things and give a powerful effect to the portraits. I chose this one to rate. This certainly looks little blur but the message is rather attractive. Keep doing

A strong powerful image that has to remind me of the F SHEIK exhibit in Paris, at the HCB foundation. The conversion is such one cannot imagine this shot in color. Beautiful composition which IMO was intuitive, and delivers complex feelings. Glad you changed your mind and posted it. I see nothing wrong with it, and everything right.
