Photographer's Note
Mandu attracts many pilgrims to NilKant, (Shiva temple). The pilgrims usually travel by foot and stay over night in one of the ruins by the village water tank. This is also most probably where the sadhus and their elepphant camped. Early morning the pilgrims are slowly packing their camp, cooking their food for the day ahead.

Hello Elaine !
Great shot...The atmosphere here is that of a movie. Colors are not strong... just enough to please the eyes... I like that. The scene is interesting, very well composed.

Another biblical scene (or is it the drugs they gave me in India ;D...), this backside light makes it a wonderful. As my eyes ran though the pic, I wished (this is a very minor only nitpick) the dog in the right side was a little easier to notice, apart from that probably one of your most complex and successful compositions so far. Really love it.

Dear Elaine
TE seems to conspire against my critiques of your shots as as soon as I hit "Add", it disappears... now it's the second time and the other, as I can see, is lost in cyberspace.
When I looked at this thumbnail, I thought I would open a painting, some Biblical illustration, but no, this is real, and utterly beautiful. To bring all these pilgrims together into one small frame with such assurance and harmony, clarity and composition, is art itself. But that is not all; you lovingly detail the surrounding too, making the pots and pans shine, the smoke cover the woman approaching from the back... the more I look at this, the more I am filled with a genuine "woooow"
Amazing, accomplished -- art.
take care,
sasa

Hi Springford
This photo captures the pilgrims engrossed in different activities.
The man cooking food, the lady changing her clothes, others doing other activities.
It also depicts how these people manage daily chores....

Hello Elaine,
No wonder that this one has attracted so many smileys. It looks like a theater set, or an opera, and all the characters are so well placed : The set is really extraordinary, and the smoke adds a lot too.
If I were you , having discovered such a place I would try it again in the afternoon or different hours just to see what was happening with a different light and perhaps you did it.
Friendly regards - Izzet

It would've been a sin to miss this one, which I donno how I did. If I am ever able to take a picture which is even 10% as good as this one I will consider myself of some worth. there are no words to describe this one, the mood, the composition, the tones, the tenor. Its a pity that i only have two points to give here! Simply THE BEST image i have seen till now in the entire TL and TE.

Hello Elaine,
I'll join the chorus in that this photo has a painterly quality thanks to your outstanding composition. You did well with exposure in this high-contrast scene. Perhaps some fill-flash would bring light to the faces.

Staying in the ruins. eh? Ok, two things I absolutely have to say about this shot:
1. Superb compo, very much like a 19th century painting in the grand style. Biblical scene, pretty much. A very fine picture.
2. I'm all confused about India - do I go, do I not? I see your pictures and I think..."Sooner Elaine than me." (Sorry but...there it is). I look at Luko's recent shots and I think "Got to get on the next plane to India". Not that you are doing a disservice to the place. On the contrary I think your photos have a terrific documentary quality - it's just that with only 8 days off at a time, I'm thinking, very inistently "Boy, Hoi An does sound GOOD!"
Sorry for the grain of cheek. The rest is pretty much heartfelt.
Best,
Francis

Hello Elaine
A masterful creation once again...a very busy composition with so many characters, yet they all fit into the scene as if it was a set of a movie. The light is great, but half the picture is in shade..the arched doorway is more than a doorway here..it's the dividing line. The effect of the smoke adds so much to the picture. Brilliant Elaine...my deepest admirations

Impressive photo Elaine. It looks like a painting from the old realistic masters. The way you played with light is crucial here and has been done so perfectly. So much to see... This deserves to be printed in gigantic proportions to be fully admired. A favorite!

Elaine, I had seen this photo on the 1st page of TE some days ago, put it in my theme to remember, and now I come back : this composition is really interesting, and taken in another of my favourite places with ruins (who knows ? yes, maybe we were at the same time in one of those places ?),
... anyway, the photo is great, I wonder how you took it as nobody seems to pay attention to you although it seems a sort of intimate courtyard, there is both a documentary interest and in the same time an great esthetical quality here,
congratulations !
Cath.

Yes, Making sure you are at the right place at the right time, and not obviously encountering opposition to taking your photograph. In this genre, they are the critical factors.
Part of the secret is familiarising yourself with the subject you are working on, taking the time.
The rest is technique, which obviously you have, and most can learn. One of the most exciting pix I have encountered here so far.

Excellent shot, which I only just noticed on the TE front page today. The lighting is very good, and I like the composition too, with the group of men on the lower right and the opening through the archway on the upper left, giving this a nice diagonal axis. This also has a great sense of place and moment, of really being there and actually in the scene too. Superb!

The pic caught my eye. At first I thought it was a posterized picture but soon it turned out it was not. It looks like a picture from a book, as if it was CMYK-ed. A very fine, old-school, so to say, effect bringing to mind old albums. I enjoy watching it - yes, you can stare for a long time as the life passes by on this picture, yet you froze it for a moment. Wishes, Tom.

This is amazing. This photo has something very special tonal attribute. The Gothic sculpture behind the men working give it a very western look.Wonderful composition.
charonferryman (21) 2011-09-05 14:30
Agree with some of the earlier commenters - this looks very much like a 19th century Orientalist painting...testament to India's timelessness, I suppose. A beautiful scene and wonderful capture.
