Photographer's Note

Located in Shivajinagar area, the lanes and bylanes are captivating. We entered a small lane dotted by numerous auto-parts shops er shacks..It is said that anything & everything you want for any brand of car, you’ll find it here. It was already dark, with the sun having set more than half an hour earlier. These kids from one of these garage/autoshops wanted us to take their picture & we were only too happy to oblige....this is their photo. Shining happy garage their natural surroundings, car tyres, autoparts & scant light. As Evren (nerve) had said "people in India are mostly happy when you take their pictures here, they even ask for it".

The only light is from the electric lamps from a post on the right outside the frame & from behind, far too less I guess for photography & what I intended to capture....The darkness of the surroundings & the brightness of the smiles; It was great to see them feel happy, when I showed them this pic in my camera's LCD screen.

It was quite a challenge for my non-DSLR camera as I took this shot in 400 ISO (the maximum possible) balancing my left hand on the car’s roof. Noise was what I had in the back of my mind.

I know this picture gives a feel of partial desaturation, BUT IT’S NOT. This is exactly how it was. I loved the colour & B&W effect. In the top left BG, is the illuminated spire of St.Mary’s Basilica, the largest church in Bangalore.

Tech Details : ISO 400, 36mm, 1/4 sec. Handheld

And how do the kid’s look in bright light?....check the WS, with flash

It was a pleasure to shoot with Sandip and exchange notes while shooting....and I think I did learn some things new.

PS : Sandip has uploaded his picture of these kids in the WS.
