Photographer's Note

reposted after a scan from a larger 8" x 10" print

every year thousands of pilgrims come to benaras either to take a holy dip in the ganges, or to cremate their loved ones.. or to simply send their prayers to the river goddess by floating a lit candle and flowers in a leaf bowl.

this particular pilgrim had come here from another part of uttar pradesh. he had come here to meet his guru and in the evenings he would go to the river to pray. at this very moment he is busy praying, he kept looking back and in between would get up and rotate and then would sit down again. it was a part of his ritual. i dont know what meaning it had. while on the banks people pray, tourists relax, taking boat rides.
