Photographer's Note
The Chinese Fishing nets at Cochin (Kochi) are something that I had always wanted to photograph. Our hotel was beside the nets on the Cochin Beach but the very best photos we found (by luck!) was when we took a short sunset boat cruise from the hotel. After a rather boring trip around the busy container port we suddenly came across the nets on the opposite bank. We were the only boat there and we spent several minutes taking photos from different positions.
The nets are at least 10 metres high and operated by several fishermen. They can be found in coastal southern China and Indochina, and Kerala.

Hello Ann,
I can understand how excited you were to see these nets. They are enormous and make a wonderful focal point, especially when backed by the setting sun (rising moon) and the subtle colours that are created.
It stood out as a thumbnail but looks even better full size.
By the way ... maybe your camera need resetting as this photo was taken next month! 😆
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Great composition, Ann. It's as if the sun is just escaping (or falling into) the fishing nets. Good contrasts and level of darkness too. Tops!

Hi Ann
really? seriously? this is too good :)
great note to go along with the photo too. funny how it all works out. We can all relate to your story, often the best scenes are the unexpected ones - as you were bored and probably thinking there wouldnt be any further photo opps along your boat ride. such a wonderful moment you captured. Allowing the nets to flow out over the frame, super. cheers

Hello Ann
It^s good to see you`re back here on TE! This is a striking shot. A fine composition with the sun perfectly placed in the frame. The fishing nets really stands out in the foreground - almost like an artwork installation of some kind. Excellent! Thanks.

Waaw Ann,this is a masterwork!! What a great idea to take the chinese fishing nets in this hour and decentralized in the composition. Very professional exposure to show us the special bonus of sun in this perfect way and great sharpness too on the dark net silhouettes in backlight too, very well done! Hello Ann.
Seeing your return from an even longer break than mine encouraged me to join in again.
I liked the note explaining how you came across the scene depicted here. The warm but subdued tones are very appealing and the large nets and their supports make an intriguing pattern against the sky. You composed and/or cropped it very judiciously. It was well worth looking at the full size version.

Andrew

Hello Ann,
I have seen these nets, but only in the bright sunshine and from the quay, so I wasn't very impressed. This is very different, mainly thanks to the beautifully mild colours of the sunset. You also found an angle where the nets have formed a very elegant pattern seen as silhouettes against the purple sky.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Ann
Fab capture with a closer view of the unique fishing nets occupying much of frame as they rightly deserve as the evening light painted partially with its glorious pinkish glow. The spectacular fireball is a real bonus point there and good inclusion of the small boat for an added interest. It's indeed a favarouble light to show off the vivid detail so beautifully. Congrats
Best regards

Hello Ann,
You were very lucky to capture the nets from this angle and at this time of day. They look superb set against the evening sky with the added benefit of the sun perfectly positioned. Very well exposed to capture the mood and the nuances of tone in the beautiful sky.

Hello Ann, what a lucky find for you! And obviously the right time of day with the setting of the sun.
It is a wonderful composition, even the buoy is in the right place. The colour is very interesting, and there is just the slightest hint of the reflected sun on the water.
Excellent.
Regards Jean.

Hi dear Ann
So poetic and moody image from South India.
I am a little surprised that this place remains unchanged for 25 years at all. 25 years ago I visited there and saw same secne but not in the evening but in the morning. The sinking orange sun is so appealing in the best cropped framewrok.
All the best and have a good day! Takero

Hello Ann,
A fascinating and very informative note and a beautiful photograph by way of illustration.
The light here is absolutely divine and you have made the very most of it and also captured the orange glow of the setting sun in the perfect position in relation to these magnificent tall nets.
And what superb detail! I can see details of at least two different types of birds perched amidst the stanchions and ropes of the nets! Glorious light and colours, perfect exposure and stunning composition.
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Ann,
I was a bit confused seeing this picture of the Chinese nets and the position of the setting sun. But then I read your note. These are the much less visited nets on the opposite bank, on the waterfront of Vypin.
Located at the very quiet coast of Vypin these nets offer a much better view than the more famous ones in Fort Kochi. I've been there a bit by chance when I took a ferry from Ernakulam back to Fort Kochi and the boat stopped first at Vypin.
There are other places in smaller canals of the backwaters in Kerala that offer magnificent views of similar nets.
I see you had the same purple sky at sunset as I had. I never saw a real blue hour in India.
Very interesting composition with the big round sun ball well positioned.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ann
This may not be your Comeback photograph, but it's close enough for me to be able to welcome you back. Mind you, I'm not a regular these days, seeming to need time out regularly... This is such an effective graphic image, even though there are no highlights (even the sun is misty and subdued). The silhouetted nets are really strong and create a thirdsy feel to the careful composition. Excellent! BTW I'm reminded of coastal fishing contraptions in Abruzzo called I believe, Trabocci.

Will

Hello Ann, Beautiful picture of these famous Chinese Nets in Kochi. Fantastic timing with the sharp setting sun just over the nets. Marvelous colours.
I observed how they worked with these nets and noticed that they usually were empty:(.

Good morning Ann,
This photo of fishing nets is so elegant; nearly like all sepia !
Their silhouettes seem to try and reach the setting sun, and the boat looks so little in the distance.
I remember well the fishing nets of Kerala. Great memories.
TFS and best regards.
Marie-Louise.
