Chamundi Hill - Nandi

I dedicate these three pictures to Gert (Holmertz) who wanted to see more photos taken on Chamundi Hill, just outside of the city of Mysore.

Not far from the top of the hill, there’s a giant monolithic statue of Nandi.
This statue is more than 350 years old, sculpted during the period of Dodda Devaraja Wadiyar who ruled from 1659 to 1673. It’s one of the oldest icons in Mysore.

Nandi is the name of the gate-guardian deity of Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva, the lord of destruction and is usually depicted as a bull.
In India you can see statues of Nandi in front of the Shiva temples, normally on the court facing the shrine.

This image of this Nandi was carved out of a colossal granite boulder on the hill slope.
After being sculpted, the statue has been rubbed with coconut oil to prevent it from cracking.
During centuries layers of oil, dust and dirt had turned it black. On older pictures you will see a black Nandi. Possibly Gert has seen it in that version …
Today the colour has changed because the statue has been cleaned using high-power water jets. So now you will see a very clean and light grey bull.

On top of the hill you find the Chamundeshwari Temple, named after Chamunda, a bloodthirsty goddess who accepts human sacrifices.
The temple was constructed in the 12th century and later the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire built the tower in the 17th century.

In the WS you find a picture of this temple. I was there on New Year’s Day, a day off for everyone in India. Inside the temple there was an incredible number of visitors. Because of the many people it was impossible to take a decent picture of the interior.

Further in the WS another event of which I don’t know the true meaning.
A little beyond the entrance to the temple it seemed like offerings were burned. Also a lot of pushing there.
I could take only one picture from the side but then so many people arrived that I hadn't a view any longer.
Then I visited the temple and afterwards I forgot to ask more explanation about the burning.
