Kids At Work : This is one image from the village of Birbhum.You can see a gang of kids going to the fields carrying bamboo baskets on their heads to help their parents already working there.The kids study at the local school too,but help their parents during their leisure.Many of them are not always lucky enough to go to higher classes and study till college,but end up as dropouts in the fifth or sixth standards to help their parents full time in the fields.The Govt.Of India has started a mid day meal programs at the school to provide school going children lunch during school hours so that the dropout percentage is reduced in the villages of India and education gets a boost.

Some tids bits about the Mid Day Meal Program :

The Mid Day Meal Scheme is a programme of the Government of India designed to improve the nutritional status of school-age children nation wide.The programme supplies free lunches on working days for children in Primary and Upper Primary Classes in Government, Government Aided, Local Body, Education Guarantee Scheme, and Alternate Innovative Education Centres, Madarsa and Maqtabs supported under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and National Child Labour Project schools run by the Ministry of Labour.Serving 120,000,000 children in over 1,265,000 schools and Education Guarantee Scheme centres, it is the largest such programme in the world.Despite the success of the program, child hunger as a problem persists in India. According to current statistics, 42.5% of the children under 5 are underweight.
