Photographer's Note
Another scan of a Kodachrome slide, but not so very old.
This is from early 2001, from outside one of the many Hindu temples that fill the town of Kanchipuram, a couple of hours drive west of the huge city of Chennai (formerly known as Madras).
I don't remember the name of this temple, it's probably just one that I happened to pass by on my way to a more famous temple. Kanchipuram is, as I just mentioned, literally filled with temples, making it an ideal place for a tourist with a camera.
This photo doesn't show anything in particular, nothing to describe or explain. It's just daily life at, or rather outside, the temple. People coming and going, a priest stepping outside to see what's going on. Just an ordinary day at the temple.
Here is a larger version.

Hi Gert,
Fine daily life scene in front of that sacred place where people gather. I like the artwork of the facade and the colored clothes. Well seen.

Hello Gert
That's a charming picture from the small town of southern India with lovely details of the old temple as well as the daily life of the people. The small boy at the left with perhaps his mother gives a very special charm to the overall wonderful composition.
Thanks for sharing and have a great new week.
best regards

Hello Gert,
I like very much how the people blend with the architectural and cultural details of the temple. They are so tightly and meaningfully bound together and it's interesting that in the photo information you didn't even include "architecture" in the categories:) I like very much the rewarding result of the wide, upward perspective. Architecture and people are very interesting and you have captured this "ordinary" scene with wonderful light management and colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Ciao Gert
ai personaggi sono ben disposti e l'architettura è interessante, un contesto perfetto per far vedere un momento di vita di questo popolo.
Ma trovo molto toccante la madre che corre dal figlio che di è allontanato.

Hi Gert, Haha, I was in Kanchipuram but later, in 2004. Interesting photo, with beautiful architecture of the temple and nice everyday life scene, like in India. Excellent composition. Strange that in 2001 still not digital photos. Seems ages ago.
Seeing such pictures, I miss India.
Have a nice day, regrads from rainy and cold Warsaw

Hello Gert - I've not been to India but the scene parallels many I've seen in SE Asia. Religion isn't something set aside for one day of the week but is rather part and parcel of every day. I like that.
The temple has a lovely set of symbolic designs on the façade. I wonder what they represent?
Warm regards

Hello Gert,
Yes, this is new in comparison to the more than a quarter of a century old gems from your archive. A fine DL shot of the devotees gathering in front of the beautiful temple. The devotees with shaved heads have offered their hairs to the God. A tradition very unique to South India is that young women devotees too shave of their fine mane as a part of the religious offering. Nice one with lots of details to enjoy. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Gert
Ciao e buona serata

Hej Gert,
A view full of details. And that seems to be quite common to photos from India. It is interesting to see many kinds of interaction between people. A timeless scene and it is very hard to guess how old that temple is.

Hej Gert
What do you mean by this photo does not have anything to tell? It has a lot to tell to me. It is a pleasant every day scene that shows the daily life of people in a great way. There is the man just coming from his prayed, the women rushing for the shopping, the mother and her small child relaxing on the steps of the beautifully decorated temple. With a bit of fantasy every one of them is telling us his own story here.
have a great day
hejdå

Hello Gert,
It is a very different impression than those given by many religious places. There is no sense of ceremony, no sense of awe or wonderment, this is a very typical day in the life of the people and the area. The people are sitting, chatting, discussing, in what might be termed a casual attitude. There is a lovely sense of community involvement.
Thank you for sharing this,
Bev :-)

Read your note with Ourania, agreed with you, a daily life category is the true description of the capture
Besides pleny of mouvement and interesting scenes like the one at the left and matching it, another litle boy at the far right
Well done, congrats

Hi Gert
having never been to India I can't speak for it precisely, but I have traveled to Thailand for 30days straight.
what i'm getting at is, spending all that time in Thailand - i hate to admit it but i became very very tired of photographing temples. They are everywhere.
did you experience the same in India??
I guess after a while they just all started to look the same and i became disinterested - but i suppose its all about how you look at the situation, negatively or positvely.
even though this is only 13 years old, because of the scan it looks like a much older scene.
very rustic and real.
many age variances in this one snap shot.
fine post
cheers

Hi Gert
One of the first things I always check when I look at your posts is the date when the photo was taken and I must say... this one is a "baby" compared with some earlier ones... ;)
Interesting to see street life with this intriguing architecture in the background. Indeed, I would love to be there now with my camera.
Have a nice day

Hello Gert,
sometimes these under appreciated buildings can be much more interesting than those with established places on the tourists routes. The one on the picture is absolutely charming despite being maybe a little bit neglected. All the details of the walls are very fine examples of art and probably I would stand there for a long time studying them. I also like the way you captured and included people in the composition, their indifference to being photographed and lack of posing. Well done!
Thanks for sharing!

In many countries the priest or other head of a church or religion most of the time are the final judge among the people. It is a nice documentation of the daily life of people and their belief. The scan retained the wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

Hello Gert,
As usual these daily life photos offer plenty of interest. I like the faded colours of the temple and the different clothes being worn. The small child crouching anchors the composition very well and draws my attention.
You have such interesting travels - TFS.

Hi, Gert,
Yes, I know Madras city. Most of all I like to see the details of the temple. Perfect quality for a scanned slide! I see there are the local people only in the temple, no tourists. Oh, yes, it is XXI century.
