7 km along the southern shore from the head of the Pang-gong Tso lake, Spangmik at 13800ft is the farthest point to which foreigners are permitted. Special permits might have to be sought for treks..

Icy glaciers and snowcapped peaks of the Changchenmo range surround it.The sapphire blue waters of the lake reflect the tall mountains ranges that surround it, its shimmering waters throwing up kaleidoscopic images of ever-changing blues and greens.

Spangmik and a scattering of other tiny settlements along the lake's southern shore are home to the nomadic Chang-pas tribes of Tibet and southeast who earn their livelihood by breeding yaks and pashmina goats and cultivating sparse crops of barley and peas in summer..
