Photographer's Note

The Lake Palace, former summer palace of the Maharana Jagit Singh. The Maharana who ruled Jaipur from 1628 to 1654 was friends with the Mughal Emporer Shah Jehan, and he had his craftsmen copy some of the beauty of the architecture in Agra.

The white marble palace was built in the 17th century on a natural foundation of 4 acres of rock. The Lake Palace is now a one of the Taj group of hotels palace resotrs. I stayed across the lake from the Lake Palace at the more modern Oberoi Udaivilas, which can be seen in the distance on the shoreline. The weather was beautiful and luckily, there had been enough rain to fill the lake prior to my arrival in Udaipur.

During my trip to Udaipur, I felt as serene as this picture of the floating lake depicts. There are no neon lights, no congested roads motorbikes or auto rickshaws cluttering the atmosphere with noise and pollution. It is a place that seems comfortable with it's past and unwilling to sucumb to the building and chaos of modern-day India.

Udaipur is on my list of places to visit again when I am in that part of the world. It is a place not to be missed.
