Photographer's Note

Notice how the desert nomad women carry all their jewelry on their person, hence this lady has a bunch of rings on, a whole armfull of bracelets and several necklaces at once.

Posing for tourists is a lucrative sideline to a life that may not necessarily hold a lot of options for this old woman. That's just an uneducated guess (please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone - have not done much extensive reading on the lives of Indian desert nomads!).

The nose ring is just something very different we don't see so much in Western society. Big question is what does she do if she needs to blow her nose? But then again, at 117°F (47°C) temperatures, I recall there were not a lot of colds going around Rajastan that time of year!

The bright red almost blurred intensity of her sari lies in an interesting direct contrast to the clarity of focus on the facial features and jewelry.

You almost wonder whether this display is just put on for the visiting tourists. I sure hope not. Though there is a bit of a look of desperation in her eyes...

Once again I am amazed at the vibrance of colours that this scanned in 12 year old photo has retained!
