Photographer's Note
This was taken in Nasik, a holy town standing on the Godavari River, one of the holiest rivers in India. It is one of the four towns where Kumbh Mela, a huge Hindu gathering, takes place every 12 years. Yet even outside this event Nasik is perennially crowded with pilgrims who come from all over India to take a dip in the holy river (which is as much holy as dirty).
This man has just taken his bath and now, while drying in the sun, is smoking a bidi, a poor man's cigarette. He attracted my attention by looking like a perched bird – and wrapping himself in that plastic sheet in the 40 degree heat!
The picture was taken under quite difficult lighting conditions (at least there were difficult for an inexperienced photographer as I am). For one thing, the sun was so strong that I blew out the foreground... And when I developed the picture it turned out that colours were very unappealing – a mixture of grey and brown. So I decided to convert it into black and white. It’s the first time I’ve ever done so and I’m not sure of the effect.

Excelent composition in my opinion: Very much in TE spirit, and perfectly adequate for daily life category.
Now what I think could be really improved is the B&W conversion. Unfortunately I can't make a workshop right now but hope someone does it for you.
Even if the exposure was difficult, I am sure that you can get a much better range of tones than you got with your conversion.
THis can come out an excelent photograph.

Great composition but the picture really lack of contrast. And disagree with Gal Eota, it is not a problem of B&W conversion as I'm almost certain it a scanned picture as the picture was taken with an EOS300 which is a film camera (unless that you meant that you were using an EOS300"D" which is digital). The picture just need to have its level adjusted and contrast a bit enhanced. Check my workshop, hope you'll like it.

great picture Joanna..ok it lacks some contrast, but, either conversion to BW or enhancing BW shots is quite easy in fact..all digital photography magazines have several examples in them and they will help a lot if you want to try again..
you caught a great moment..it is a very good composition..and it is very sharp for a scanned picture, having lovely grains..

hi Joanna (or maybe Aska ;) i like this picture, the light is very harsh and all bright areas are blown out, but what makes the picture is the pose of the guy, the way he holds his cigarette and the way you composed the shot - the frame is completely occupied by him.. good stuff
