Photographer's Note

Back to showing Ladakh in colours. Today's two photos were taken somewhere just outside the main city Leh, but unfortunately I can't identify any of the beautiful stupas shown here. In my diary from this journey in 1985 I noted here and there that I had walked a short distance from the center to see monasteries and various Buddhist monuments, but in most cases I didn't mention any names or exact locations, and trying to locate them on the map today only makes me confused. The city has obviously changed so much in 33 years, and my memory is failing me equally.

So I guess it doesn't really matter exactly what these photos show. I enjoy both of them, even though the scanning from Kodachromes slides is far from perfect. There is one stupa (Tibetan: chörten) here and another one in the WS.

A stupa is a Buddhist domed building usually containing a relic of a saint.

Here is a larger version.
