Photographer's Note
13 th June,2007. The monsoon rain hits Kolkata. She appeared so violently. More than 100 mm rain. As per report 8 km of rain cloud hanging over Kolkata just before the rain. It broke down upon the city and completely disrupts the life. Almost 20 people died. I was coming to my home from my workplace, I found lot of opportunities to shoot. Accompanying one of my friends we started exploring. When we reached to College street it was more than knee deep water and there were some entrance examination was going on, it was full of chaos there. The depth of water increased as we were approaching from Keshab Sen Street towards Amherst Road. We found its not safe to go further when it crossed my waist level. This shot is the first of the water clogged Kolkata.
Hope you like it

Quite an up to date document Partha showing us clearly the terrible situation, I had that once in Chennai, within half an hour the water up to my knees and the guthers can't cope with it, but lucky 2 hours later all the water was gone and the sun shining again.
I hope these people will be spared from worse.

So Calcutta still gets waterlogged like this. Bad for the city but good for photo oportunities. The rickshawpullers have been well used.

Hi Partha,
This is a kind of documentary picture that we don't see very often on TE. It's an excellent capture and very informative. Technically impeccable, maybe tilting a bit, but that adds to the drama. I have been to Calcutta many times, but never during the monsoon. I guess I missed some fine photo opportunities.

Hi Partha,
What a frozen moment of chaos .. the water .. the people .. the color .. all work together to amplify what your are trying to communicate.
take care,

Great photojournalism, Partha. The image conveys the state of disarray amid a disaster rather well. The pov, which shows the situation almost through the eyes' of the man on the right, is superb. Regards,
