Photographer's Note
Kolkata is a city of a strange charm. It catches the traveler by surprise, at the most unexpected places. A massage corner under stoned arches, a few steps away from the Hoogly river, where men get their skin rubbed, kneaded, scraped, oiled, under the expert hands of other men, in a timeless athmosphere. A secondary railway station in the middle of the town, where the locals casually pass the tracks, a towel on the shoulder, a toothbrush in the hand, as you wonder where is the giant bathroom. A busy flower market where you can hardly walk, on an undefinable slippery soil, bumping into the phoolwallahs, sweating under their perfumed loads. A dissuasive warrior, training its martial art, half-naked in the company of crows, with the huge Howrah bridge stoical in the morning fog, for background...
Unlike other megapoles, it still has a feet in the past with its antique yellow Ambassadors taxis, its even more antique rickshaws, on high wheels like their japanese ancestors, introduced in the city in 1900, its decrepit buildings from the british Empire that have lost their splendor but not totally their style. That's maybe the reason why Kolkata casts a secret spell.
But there is another reason : Kolkata is the city of Sayeed Rahman. :)
***
This picture has been taken near the jetty, where ferries connect the twin cities of Kolkata (on the east bank of the Hoogly river) and Howrah (on the West bank). Don't ask me on which bank I was, I never paid attention to this, lost all the time ... :)
For Sayeed. And for
Tushar, without who this journey would not have been the same, and to some extent, even not possible.
You are the apple of my eye, guys!

Hello Marine!
So you had been to my city...a city I had left 10 years back travelling across various megalopolises in India. It was good as well that you were able to catch up with Sayeed & Tushar!
In my opinion, this is one of the best portraits from you, total naturalness in colours, skin tones & that look... he seems to be looking through & not at you!
Best,
Angshu
What news of Sayeed BTW?

नमस्ते,
आप के ये सम्मान के लिये धन्यवाद. हम सेब हैं तो आप सितारा हैं. LOL...
A nice portrait again from you. The colors are fabulous and the tones are natural and real. I love that look. Well that piercing look. He looks unfazed and nothing seems to disturb and bother him. The background idols of god give energy to the composition.
For the Kolkata trip we should be really thankful to Spiritual Sayeed. :) A must visit friend whosoever has Kolkata in itenary. LOL..
Have a nice time

Bonsoir Marine

Hello Marine,
A beautiful portrait with lovely detail and DOF. I am wondering what the man is thinking - he is looking straight at you. Stunning work that I enjoy very much. I also enjoyed your note.

bonjour marine,
I am following your shots and those of the two apples with great pleasure, along with the comments and the replies that follow, they are almost like a travelogue told by a chorus :)
sometimes a picture captures our eye because of a single anatomical detail - without dismissing the rest of the elements here, I find myself looking at this man's thin lips over and over again. maybe it's because I find them unusual for a man, or maybe because they do not curl up to appease us with a smile and they seem to follow the downward line of his eyes...
Looking at the background, I have to say that I still don't understand what the blue patches are... is it a statue? they look like arms and legs to me - but are they?
have a good weekend!

Hi Marine,
Superb portrait of the man. Really wonderful details, especially on the facial hair and the his eyes are so intense and engaging. Love the soft background that bring our attention more to the man, Beautiful rich color and yet very natural.

bonjour MArine

Hi Marine
A super, striking and emotive portrait well composed with the eyes being the most powerful element. You have caught them perfectly, the head being on a slight tilt adds some dynamism to the image, good use of shallow depth of field and excellent focus with lot of detail. The eyes are stunning, staring straight out at you to set you thinking and I wonder what his story is? His eyes give a hint of being a bit in doubt about you capturing his soul. A moody but powerful shot nevertheless with some appeal, expression and character. A fantastic portrait which makes me doubt about what this man is really thinking; hope, empty, sceptical, doubt, wistful, sad? What a lot to possibly read in those eyes!!! Splendid photo work Marine, TFS
Best regards

Bonjour Marine,
Some great portraits you've uploaded recently! This is my favourite. I like the look of the man, a bit sad, perhaps. Great sharpness and dof to create that interesting background blur. And those glasses are a superb finishing touch! Excellent job!
