Photographer's Note
This is the place where Artist Prabhas Mondal (seen in the picture) was creating idols of Goddess Durga.
Goddess Durga (or Devi Durga) is worshipped mainly in Bengal and other parts of India. These days she is also worshipped where ever bengali community resides. "Durga Puja" (festival of worshipping the Goddess Durga) has become more a carnival than a religious festival to us.
Goddess Durga, riding on her Lion killed a demon named Mahishashura when demons fought the Gods. She saved the earth from devastation. To commemorate her bravery this festival is observed.
This idol of Durga with Ganesha, her son in her lap is a bit different and not generally seen.
== == ==
Prabhas Mondal is rooted in a remote village named Panchghara (about 50kms away from Calcutta) of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. To prepare the idols of various Hindu Gods throughout the year, he stays at Baruipur, 25 Kms away from Kolkata (Calcutta). He neither own a paddy field, nor he can cultivate. Only thing he can do is - creating gods and goddesses. In this photo he is seen to run his brush over the idol to make it more glossy. A lot more of work is remaining and it will take another 2-3 days to dress up the goddess with clothes, ornaments and ammunitions to fight.
After that this idol will be taken to a dais, she will be worshipped, long queue will wait to visit the idol.
And Prabhas Mondal will return to his den, leaving the idol completed, to prepare for another session of festivity ..
Lastly, I promised him that I will be back to his idol and snap one complete picture with him. Please wait till next week.

A good and timely shot from Kausik. I hope you have set the right mood. It was Mahalaya yesterday and we are already into Devi-pakhsya, or the fortnight of the Devi (= goddess).
I like the combination of colors on the half completed goddess image. Good you have snapped the foto of a not-so-common posture (son Ganesh on the lap).
It is of the more traditional style, though these days, goddess idols look very much contemporary.
Nice work.
