Photographer's Note

One of the fine characteristics of Chinese communication is that the people give wonderful names to objects. On the picture two examples are visible: in the foreground you are looking at the Hei Long Tan (Black Dragon Pool), while the Yulongxue Shan (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain) is watching in the background. Dragons must be identified with beautiful places in China!

The Black Dragon Pool is located in the northern part of Lijiang, a very nice town in Yunnan with a lovely old part. It was a 10-hour drive from the railway station in Panzihua to Lijiang over rather bad roads when we went there in October 2000, but I remember that loads of people were working on the construction of new roads. Lijiang is probably much easier accessible now and I guess that even more tourists are now visiting this place. That's good for the local people (I think...), but hearing foreign languages most of the time when you're walking through this town, would considerably reduce the fun of staying there for me.
