Photographer's Note
This photo was taken while walking up and down the alleys of "Old Town Kashgar", which is the Uighur section of Kashgar. I love how children can find a playground anywhere they are. These children were running toward us to come and talk but down other alleys we found a soccer game, some sort of game played with rocks, and others just hanging out and talking. I love the moment that this photo captured but unfortunatly it was taken with a point and shoot camera. This was my first experience with Adobe Photoshop since I had to scan the photo in and lost much of the detail and sharpness. I was trying to zoom in on the children's faces and bring them more into focus but in the process the rest became over sharpened. I would appreciate any help with how I could better this photo using Adobe or any tips you may have. Thanks!

Hi Michelle, too bad you lost the quality and sharpness when processing it with Photoshop.
Looking through the blur though, I see a wonderful photograph! All grey, and grumpy buildings, but then these little kids, jumpy and colourful, come running in.
Like the sun appearing behing a dark cloud.

I like very much the composition of those children in colorful clothes versus walls, buildings and pipes. I think it's not out of focus, but the overall quality is rather poor. But this is a matter of camera. THe photo itself is very nice and well done.

It's a pity the quality is not optimal and I would have liked a tighter crop of the top. But I like the way you captured the children in their mouvement...

You could try using the marquee (crop) tool to select only the area around the faces and sharpen this a little - then use a less violent Unsharp Mask on the entire photo. This might work, although you might want to play around with different sharpening settings a few times before getting one you're happy with. Potential to be a really good photo!
