Children in Ali (Shiganhe in Tibetan-sorry for spelling)in Western Tibet act like children everywhere when they see camera pointed toward them:)Becouse of the high altitude, much of Sun exposure and lack of vegetation that gives shadow people in Western Tibet wear a cowboy-like hats.

I want to share some more impressions about Tibet in part as the respond to Ferrus post.I 've been there twice.Once in 2003 and 2nd in 2006.For the first time I travelled from north to south-visiting Lhasa,Shigatse,Garden monastery ..so those major sites in Tibet. It was March/April so there were not too many tourist.I travelled by trucks and by pilgreems' buses and I found Tibetans nice, cheerfull people, always inviting me for salty tea while visiting the monastery.Lhasa,Shigatse were big,well-supplied,Chinese-style cities with small, crambling Tibetan quaters. But You could feel the spirit of the place. In Lhasa there was plumbing actions taking place -the whole cora(in my words the praying trak around the monastery) had the road removed and ditches 2-meter deep left..but still people continued..
last year I travelled from Western to Eastern Tibet. This in my opinion is more authentic part ,still not paved so not so much tourist -traffic arrives.People live more simple life perhaps more similar to what they have before "joining to motherland".Simple but poor. Not saying extremly poor.I advise the novel of Alai “Red poppy” to have the sample of the life in Tibet when it was politicly independent area.
I visited Lhasa this time as well.this time the train from Bejing funcioned. That was different city.crowded mostly with loud chinese tourist.A lot of tourist business even in the monastery-in Drak Yerpa for example you could take the picture on the Yak ;pay for a prayer and so on.After hours the monks eat the sweets bring for Budda Statues by pilgreems and played in cards for money with local people!!
In my opinion the lost of tradition is what Tibet and it’s habitants should be afraid of.
Hope the smiles remain!
