Photographer's Note

Chinese people are stereotypically known for eating what may seem to be very strange foods (I'm allowed to say this..I'm part Chinese) to westerners like dog, cat, lotus seed paste, etc. This is a picture of "ham yu", or salted fish, a food commonly eaten by many Chinese people excluding myself. I remember going to my grandma's house seeing salted fish hanging in her kitchen window ready to be thrown in a large pot of soup. This stuff smells, and when I say it smells, it smells really bad. I'm still amazed at how people can stomach it, and apparently salted fish has been proven to lead to nasal cancer. In making the fish, the fish are caught, salted and left out in the sun to dry for a long time, preserving them. The end result is a very hard, crunchy fish that you could probably beat your child with.

I took this photo on Cheung Chau Island, a small island with a fishing village atmosphere, and could smell the saltiness from the fish while I took it. I guess, in the end, tastes are all subjective.
