Photographer's Note

Continuing my series of ultramodern architecture in Zhujiang in Guanghzou (Canton).

The new opera house of Guangzhou (Canton) is the 'flat' building at the front. It is one of the landmark sites in Zhujiang, Guangzhou's 'new city' district.

In April 2002 an international architectural competition attracted Coop Himmelbau, Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid - each producing detailed designs. In November 2002, Zaha Hadid's "double pebble" was announced the winner and the groundbreaking ceremony was held early in 2005.

May 2010 saw Shahar Stroh direct the premiere production of the opera house: Puccini's Turandot which had in previous years been a controversial opera in China.

The theatre has become the biggest performing centre in southern China and is one of the biggest theatres in the nation.

Meanwhile, rural poverty is only a few hours away, probably waiting for the next best opportunity to move to the city. China is a country of contrasts. All the contrast of the world within one country.
