Photographer's Note
I could not read what expression she had
when i met this little girl.
I asked her looked at me and made a smile.
her father also asked her do so,
but she didnt.
and then i got this photo.

Your photos are never just "cute", there is always a street edge to them, a realism that has yur special stamp written all over it.
nice simple capture, expressive face!
Cheers,
Francis

You know I have been in love with many of your uploads, this one isn't one of them. Unlike in the other images of children from you that I recall, this one is way too tight, I don't see the typical Mingfang poetry in it, and unlike Francis I think this is a cute kid pic and not much more, you can do so much better than that.
I hope you won't get upset by my straight forward critique, as my intention is not to put you or your image down, but to encourage you to explore and go higher where I know you are capable of, and not to be happy or satisfied with average pics that are plenty on the net. You have plenty of god given talent, this pic doesn't match it.

i think i'll disagree with both francis and peter here..
i don't think there's that particualr street edge to it..
nor do i think it's a typical "cute kid" portrait..
on the other hand i feel that this portrait has a pretty formal feel which perhaps the people at the national portrait gallery, london would love..
and that formal feel seems to come from her being so proud for the photograph..
this is something that i'd see in the national geographic magazines from the 80s (ngs are getting quite crappy now.. think will have to cancel my subscribtion) when there were these amazing photostories from hongkong, the beautiful one from vietnam (by david alan harvey).. infact the cover photograph of the little girl smiling in that little boat by harvey is just too fabulous.. the girl mught be cute.. but atmosphere makes the photograph worth treasuring..
take care :)
p.s. i think you've caught the girl with the grace and poise of a classical indian danceer (all forms) maybe that's why i feel that this stands above the usual kid portrait..
p.p.s. i should also mention that i don't think that it's the photographer's fault that the kid is cute looking.. some photographers might get stuck at the "cute looks" but you've managed to capture a part of her nature here.. she seems intense and proud..

hi Mingfang. I like this red coat of her's and ezpecially that hat. her position, holding onto the pole is great, like she is going to swing around on it. Yes, she is cute, but not that typical, big smile holding a kitty cat kind of cute... but like Sohrab said, nor is it edgy and daring... it is just a good shot, plain and simple.

PS- why not post some of the photos from the odyssy site, there are some great, edgy photos there.

I can see from miles away that Mingfang has posted today! And it is a little girl, all in red, facing you with a quizzical expression. For me what makes this shot is not only her expression but the mise-en-scene, the surrounding, the hutong's decayed milieu. Without that, it would have far less power.
Take care Mingfang!
