Photographer's Note

A while back I posted Chefs on the Move. This photo was taken a few moments from that one. A not-so busy main road close by the Forbidden City of Beijing on a snowy winter's day.

One thing you very rarely see in Chinese cities is more than one child with an adult. The one-child policy was introduced in the early 1980s, so the large majority of people under about 20 do not have brothers or sisters. Contrary to a lot of (foreigners) ideas, it is permitted to have more than one child, but you have to pay a series of fines which make it prohibitively expensive for most people.

So this is the result: a mother walking in downtown Beijing with (probably) her only child.
