Photographer's Note
Two girls at Steung Mean Chey garbage dump in Phnom Pehn. Just a scene from their daily life.
They probably live near the dump, there is a lot of small wooden houses around. They probably help their parents and their parents are probably somewhere around. They carry sacks on their backc and put things they find there... that is what I have noticed being there. Also I noticed that those kids are ordinary kids, you see smiles on their faces, they laugh, they play, great kids... But sometimes you can see something sad in their faces. I think they grow up faster than other kids.
I know thet some people from Non-Governmental Organizations help those local people working and living there. I met two French girls, they were working at Steung Mean Chey, they told me about this place.

I can see a look of hope in her eyes. The way the light touches her face is dramatic. This is very good. Excellent. (Your shot are getting better and better everytime you embark on a trip. So where's the next one?)
IMHO, the frame is quite big though. It shothers the picture a bit. Try a very tiny white frame. Again, this is just my opinion.

This is excellent. One of the girls seems to be studying some rubbish, the other is looking off into the distance - like she is hoping for something else (or something like that). The main subjects are very sharp and the shallow dof is good too.

Another sad scene from your dump sseries. I'd be interested in a more detailed note. Is there any kind of organisation to this, or do they just turn up to see what they can find. Is it crucial for there existance, or is there some kinds fun element to it. Fine shot.

The composition, the light, the eyes of the children, the DOF, the smoke in the background : all is good in this photo.
Just great !

Great shot Maciek. good framing and DOF.
i dont know if you have increased the saturation but i think soft and pale colors matches to this atmosphere much better. i would therefore suggest lower saturation or BW. see my WS.

What a scene Maciek, Happiness that is the great thing about kids, that we as adults loose over time. They can enjoy their part, although I'm sure that no one should have such a life. As for the picture, I like the colors and the way the girl is standing and the wind through her hair, replace the background and you wouldn't know it's a girl in a dumpster.

(1213) 2004-04-26 9:52
Great DoF, it turns a pile of garbage into a soft palette of colours. The light on the two girls further enhances how the focus makes them stand out in almost 3D. The standing girl's pose is wonderful. What is she looking into the distance for? Hope? Escape?...or her dad on top of a nearby pile? ;-)

Hi Maciek. For me, this is the best photo of your dump series so far. The way the girl on the left is looking is just a great expression I think. I also find your positioning and relative size of the two girls to be very good here. Maybe you could do just a little Photoshop work to brighten up the sitting girl's face? Good shot Maciek.

Another very evocative scene from your Cambodia trip, Maciek. A sobering moment that escapes my words. I would also like to lean towards a reading of seeing hope in the standing girl's face. A standout in your album that is already unique by any standards; very well captured.

A very fine capture from the dump. The girls are barely visible in all the background colors so similar to their clothes, specially the little one. But that face in the red scarf shines and sort of gives some hope. Excellent composition with the girl on the side like that.

(11836) 2004-04-26 16:54
A very good shot, though it shows a very sad reality. These two girls seem to be part of the dump, their life seems somehow to be reduced to it. When I see this I feel ashamed to have all the comfort the west can afford.
I think the colours are really great here. The objects on the dump are rich in varied colours. I think the DOF is also very good.

I agree about the faces, I wish I could see more detail, but on the other hand this is one amazing shot. The colors, I think, need to be rich...if you tone them down, the shot would not have the same impact, I think. Maciek, this is very Steve McCurry...if Steve McCurry ever went to shoot pictures in a dump (not sure...maybe he has). Anyway, excellent work.

this one is a killer maciek! great compo placing the two girls on the right side of your frame, shot at their level to include the viewer in the scene. the background is blurred to please and her look upwards towards what one could imagine as the search of a brighter future is just right! ... nothing to complain about for me. Certainly one to be proud of. Wonderful light and facial expressions. The smoke at the back, DOF and foreground colours are important elements of the composition. I think it would be a great picture even if these children were standing in a bed of flowers. The fact they are somewhere much harsher adds to the emotional impact. A beautiful picture of an ugly reality.

Ray of hope... your title puts it forward.. Looking at the eyes of the girl... i wonder if she sees the hope, a hope that she can be like 'other normal' kids. Hope that she may be out of this slump someday....Or may be you are right, may be they grew faster than other kids.
It's sad to say and imagine that this is also their 'playground'. Sadest part is our lives goes on putting a side the griefs of the worlds.
Great capture... thanks for showing us that we don't live in a perfect world.

Hi, Maciej
Thanks to Bala for pointing this one in one of his notes. What i think you brought out here the most, besides what you have said and others too, is that the trash is overwelming them. It is like a mountain, but climbing it is not delivering a sense of awe, a sense of being at one with nature, like other mountain-climbing, but exactly the contrary. Great work from you here, everything is in the image and still goes beyond it. Way beyond.

This is one of those shots that turns tragedy into beauty. Reminds me of what Sebastião Salgado does. Even as it pleases aesthetically, it hurts emotionally, and it also calls into question the ethics of photography and the voyeurism of the first-world observer. It's a really interesting piece of work for that reason. And needless to say, the technical execution is praiseworthy. What will happen to those children now? Will the photo make a difference? Who knows?

Image très forte reflètant une triste réalité qu'il est bon de rappeler. Le cadrage est très bon et la profondeur de champ bien dosée permet de ne pas se laisser "divertir" par la masse de détritus.

Excellent technique in this image. You approach this subject matter like a compassionate journalist.

Hi Maciej...I can not say that it is a beautiful picture because it's a very sad situation you show us...but at least it gives us an idea of the kind of life a lot people have to live...Thanks for sharing...regards Oli

--
Personnaly i don't feel totaly comfortable with the picture. Technically and aesthetically, it is obviously very well done.
But i can't help asking myself "is it worth it?"
French writer Romain Gary wrote (if i remember well) that war did a lot for the arts, but art did very little against war.
I think it's pretty much the same for photography and misery.
finally, misery doesn't care of photogrpahy.

Stunning capture Maciej, their expressions and gestures are just like symbols of that situation.
As far as the technique, IMO you choosed greatly the aperture, the BG is perfectly out of focus with the detail of the smoke.
Congratulations

This photo says more than thousands of words. I did not see this side of Phnom Pehn, but I understood there was great poverty. Excellent photo but so sad...

Hi Maciej
I havent commented for long time on trekearth but coming across this picture, i have to thank you for sharing such an expressive and real capture. The figure's expression is deep and the shadow covering half of this girl's young face is nicely dramatic. The blur suits the backround subject, overwhelming poverty, mistakingly colourful....
Keep it up

Wow strong picture, though it is sad to see little kids on a garbage dump. Good to hear that there still are organizastions who care for these people.

Hello Maciej:
Very very nice photo.
I will not say that the photo is beautiful, and I feel as if a knife were piercing my heart.
Almost of people take picture for joy. My personal think that a photo can express what we thinking from heart is a real good photo. Otherwise, it is just a beautiful photo, nothing inside.
Best regards,
Nelson

you project the ugly side of our planet earth in the best way. It's so sad that there are millions of children living in such a conditions and even worth on our planet.
Thanks for showing us once more the sad realities of life.

Perfect photo. You caught the exact moment. Again, which level of hell was this in? Somehow, a green smilely just doesn't do this justice.

An extraordinary shot. The story is so strongly told in the faces and in the rubbish with the smokey backround.

I love this picture. The colors are fantastic and you really got to capture how these children feel in these dumps. This is one of those pictures that I could watch or hours thinking about the situation and what we can do about it~ Thanks

what a moment you got there... I would prefer a black border instead of white just to give it the dramatic feeling... beautiful even without...
