Lonely Planet talks about the Indiana Jones experience at Beng Mealea, much of which has been left un-restored. There are some raised walkways but when we went with a guide we had to start by climbing (with assistance when needed) over a big pile of fallen stone blocks (top photo). We then walked around the outside of part of the ruins through a jungley area (middle photo) finally arriving at the general exploration area with its raised walkways.
It was a good experience with a good young guide. I don't think that tour groups could do that walk unless they were broken down into very small groups. It was definitely not suitable for wheel chairs.

Hello Ian,
I remember the different spots of these photos.
I admire the good clarity of the upper picture with the view through the doorway. It gives a very good impression of a visit of Beng Mealea.
At the time of my visit there were no tour groups but several individual Asian tourists were there. As a result, it was indeed a bit of queuing on the wooden walkway and the stairs.
Good point of view and excellent composition of the bottom photo.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ian,
I guess visitors on wheelchairs are advised to go somewhere else. This place might provide a stronger sense of experiencing "the real thing" than Angkor Wat and other easily accessible sites. The three photos are all very clear and sharp and certainly interesting.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ian,
I still cannot believe that Pol Pot ordered the destruction of large parts of this historic site simply because he did not want the site over run with tourists. Another goof triptych of images with excellent sharpness and framing. Tfs!

Hi Ian,
This was probably a risky climb inside the ruins. The point of view is showing the details of the different section of the temple. The light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Ian,
I thoroughly understand the Indiana Jones link, this is like true exploring!
You are right, a large group would not have been able to obtain the personal assistance, climbing over rocks, that you received.
I like the linked photographs, explained in the text, so that we are sharing the experience with you.
The quality of the photographs is excellent, revealing the dilapidated state of the temple, its setting but also showing how beautiful it would have been when built.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian,
A nice trio of photos giving us a vicarious Indian Jones experience. Great views of the temple being consumed by the jungle. We get to see some of the architectural style, which looks different to the more famous Angkor Watt. Great sharpness and light management.
