Photographer's Note
TE'ers,
Happy New Year. These guys were quite happy when I shot them earlier this month...oops, LAST month. I like the compo and their expressions, but HATE the background and washed out colors. I tried to improve this in PP, but am afraid that I'm simply lousy still with such. Thus, I've simply posted the original. Any WS's would be GREAT appreciated. Thanks.
Dave

I don't mind the background at all actually. the baloons and there colours only adds on to the happy expression of your modells. They indicate a reason for there smiles which is not only cause that are being photographed, there is a feast too.
It is difficult to do anything against teh background though. The white part am afraid is more or less bepnd rescuing. this is simply cause ther is no information there to work with. You will have to add information in. The part of the baloons that are completly washed out will be hard to save to but as for the colours in te midle, some saturation will bost the colours for you. If you don't want to saturate teh models then use a adjustment layer of some sort so that you can apply a layermask to it.
But since you really seem to dislike the background and since i love playing around in photo shop i did a WS for you. It is 100% cheeting. I changed the whole background ;-)

These are wonderful faces, well captured and worth seeing. I don't think the faded background detracts much from the photo. Saturating it more would distract from the subjects.

I think you are being overly hard on yourself Dave.
The light background just focusses the attention on the two darker shapes, and the faces within. And they are the strength of the photo.
Well done.

Dave, I like the photo as it is. the different color of the balloon give more variety and eliminates monotone. I like very much the happy expression you captured its so contagious. thanks for sharing it just remind me to wear a smile all the time despite of everything....rgds

What a happy image. I like it justy as it is. The light background serves to reinforce the happy image of the pair but not draw attention away from them. Well done

I've been browsing through your photos, and this one really caught my eye. You captured something wonderful with this photo, and while I share your sadness that the sky is so blown out, you totally NAILED the exposure on the people and that's what truly matters.
The expressions are great, and while the boy is a little out of focus (the shot could have done with a bit smaller aperature.. 5.6 maybe? I'm not sure what camera you're using) it doesn't detract from the photo because it's just so.. good.
I've done a workshop on the photo, and while the changes are minor and few I think it adds a lot to the photo technically. I hope you enjoy it!

spontaneous smile. Kid's smile is unintentional. Very impressive picture. Good one David.

Looking at the photo it is easy to understand why people like it: it is a great photo ! Seeing the happiness of those people is so good !
I looked at the good workshop of Zandra (zto) and your answer where you tell that you like the balloons but just dislike their color and the white sky.
Well I tried to please you at best as I can.
please give a look at the workshop.
Mathieu
