Photographer's Note

Market day in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, in May 1973. Same place as yesterday's picture. It was quite common to see Afghan men carrying guns in public, often with cartridge belts across their chests. Every one's right to carry weapons to protect their homes and families was as natural in Afghanistan in those days as it is in the USA today. It was with homemade guns like these that the resistance against the communist regime started in 1978.
