The church of Gkremiotissa is of byzantine architecture and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

There is a classic legend of how the church was built in the Ottoman era. Classic in the sense that the tradition wants the most important churches in the Cyclades built after the discovery of an image, usually of the Virgin Mary and usually of the Cretan school of icon painting.

Residents of Ios found the picture on the rocks of the beach Mylopotas. Arrived from Crete, from where the Cretans had thrown it into the sea to escape from the Turks. The citizens of Ios decided to build a church to accommodate the picture and a place of pilgrimage.

But their efforts to build a church near the present Cathedral of Ios proved fruitless as the temple every morning were demolished and the image stood in the church's current position on both cliff faces to the south to the island (Crete) from where it began its journey.
