Photographer's Note
It was late afternoon. THE light was coming on angkor Wat. THE light is the 2-3 minutes where the light is at its best on Angkor. At that moment, It seems like the ruins are litteraly on fire (see that in a later post...;) ).
But then came those 10 monks taking pictures of themselves in front of the lotus pond. I started shooting like a silly boy...then the National Geographic reporter (see his reportage on Cambodia in june) started shooting too...then the crowd started surrounding us (the monks, me, the NAt Geo photographer).
And then came the donkey...he started swimming ten meters into the pond, went around and came right back to the monks...and stayed there for the pose for like 2-3 minutes.
Everyone was in awe...I thought it was amazing.
"this happens all the time here"
This is what the National Geograpic told me while he was pushing the shutter on his Canon. He took like 300 pics of this situation. I told him, woa this is special! Well, no, it is not. What makes this special is the light, but seriously, it happens all the time...
ah well...I thought it was pretty amazing anyway...

Hi Marc,
Your Cambodia trip seems to have much more than complaints about your accident... You met an NG reporter, you even took photos with him and you had chat with him while photographing... This may make me little jealous :)
About light, yes it seems nice but I would like to see your future post before saying something about it.
About scene, it is really funny! Donkey coming to meet with the monks to pose NG and TE men :))) LoL
Links are also helpful...
Cheers!

People taking pictures of people by the pond at Angkor Wat happens all the time... but a group of monks sometimes. The donkey (when I was there it was a slightly lighter horse) probably hangs around all the time... but taking a swim too is rare. Spent a day in total camping around both ponds and the moat including sunrise, sunset, night lights, and some in betweens and none of the above happened. So to get the monks, donkey, and as burGu says, the NG photographer... is not an "all the time" happening, and I would have been thrilled. Thumbs up for a great shot of the "action", and the brightly sun-lit robes really puts the colour into the mix.
The lotus seems to have receeded somewhat since I was there in early January. Couldn't get a decent panoramic reflection at that time.

Hi Marc
great use of the lighting here which shows of the oranges superbly. A interesting scene, not sure if the donkey is a hinderance in this shot but the story is a great read. The reflections are awesome, well done, must make a trip to Cambodia one day myself, sure looks like an interesting place.

Hi Marc,
I guess you see pictures of this place here often. What realy fascinates me is the donkey swimming up and joining the scene so randomly.
I'm surprised monks have digital cameras being austere and all. I like the light on the foot of the man in the middle, and of course the posture of the two boys being photographed.
I actually think you could have cropped Angkor wat out. Or maybe not.
I am less than impressed by the Nat Geo photographer. I learned from their site (linked on TL) that they are not looking for photographers per se, but people with college degrees. I find that stupid. You are a photographer, or you are not. What does a degree in say, polital science, have to do with it? College is where you go to get fleeced, and have other people form your mind.
Anyway, I like the photo.

Salut Marc

Hi Marc,
Thats a cool story, and it must have been quite a strange experience. I do not think that this sort of thing happens all the time, I certainly was not so lucky when I was there. Nice light indeed making their orange robes stand out with vibrancy, and I like your point of view from behind the monks showing them documenting themselves and of course the amazing Angkor Wat.
Best Regards

Bonjour Marc,
Its been awhile since I last visited you dude! Interesting title which makes a good point also featuring inserts of your fellow photographers. You know what the monk's version has good potential, like the composition with the inclusion of the donkey and the eye contact that plays within the frame. "This happens all the time here" with creative eyes on the panning on this ancient site. I like it ;)
All the best!

Marc!
That is a truly lovely scene. I like that a lot. It is so optimistic and makes me smile and think about my own trip to Angkor. I think your composition is very good and the light is just perfct to show all the colours right. Simply top effort. Cheers!

both the pic and the note have given me a smile, tnx for that marc... a surreal scene this is i think, the donkey looks so cool out there... i am not sure if the vertical format was the best choice for this compo but it is still an amazing shot my friend...

Hi Marc
It's a great and quite funny shot, much thanks to your interesting note. Well, perhaps this happens all the time over there but I can understand why there was an amazing moment. I would like to see something like that myself. Your capture of this situation is great, the timing is perfect with all the monks fitting well in the shot. The donkey and the photographer adds a lot of joy to the whole scene and with the mighty Ankor Wat in the background the image is complete. interesting from FG to BG.
Excellent work!

Salut Manamoune!
Comment se porte le plus talentueux photographe de Quebec City?... Marcus, ta shot me fait baver...
Low profile man, low profile...
Excellent boulot Marc, une de tes images les plus significatives. Don't believe them, it doesn't happen all the time! You were there at a key moment.
A bientot!
Andre

Great note and great photo Marc. The light is indeed very nice (although the sky is a bit on the washed side...) and the whole situation is priceless. So much to see, so much to explore. Could build an entire story based on just this single frame. Those oranges are really great. I love this one.

Hi Marc, another great shot. Again using the vertical, like you, I think it just looks great. The colours are good, image sharp and your composition is very very unique. And funny, it gave me a giggle - the donkey looks WELL impressed. Well done & TFS, Lisa

Hi Marc!
I almost missed this one! This is what I call a different way to show Angkor:)! The scene is funny and perfect, even the little horse is a good detail here. Light and colours are very good too.
