Photographer's Note
The Grand Canal - Canal Grande - Canałasso is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses - vaporetti and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola. At one end the canal leads into the lagoon near Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin: in between it makes a large S-shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters (16.5 ft).
The Basilica of St Mary of Health - Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. It stands on a narrow finger of land between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called Plague-churches. In 1630 Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death. The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent and Francesco Guardi.

Hello Lucie - An original interpretation of a familiar location. Technical management is excellent, lovely silky water with good reflections and fine detail in the buildings. The blue cast is a matter of personal taste, do I like it? I'm not sure. A fine shot and more than worth 2 points. Warm regards Rosemary

hi lucie,
what an incredible dreamlike quality you have achieved in this picture. the low light combined with the long exposure time and the f22 stop have created a wonderful effect. the silk appearance of the water is stunning, while the rich colours of the reds,a nd golden yellows contrast so well against the cooler blue tones of the scene. perfect depth of field, detail and sharpness.
regards,
brian
