The Sagrantino wine road reaches into the heart of the Umbria region through the places lived by San Francesco d'Assisi and his Song of the Creatures, although it is at the same time a ruby red itinerary, like the colour of the noble wines of these lands. Between the townships of Bevagna, Montefalco, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell'Umbria and Gualdo Cattaneo, the Sagrantino grape variety has found its ideal habitat from which derives the red Montefalco Sagrantino Docg that has been awarded many prizes in its two versions: dry and passito. Another famous red wine, prevailingly produced with Sangiovese grapes, is Montefalco Riserva Doc that undergoes ageing for at least one year in oak-barrels in the numerous cellars of this land. There is also Montefalco Bianco, obtained with prevailingly Grechetto and Trebbiano grapes.

The itinerary starts in Bevagna, a small urban jewel near Foligno that still keeps intact its medieval aspects in its lanes and town-walls. The town square, with its three churches, the 13th century Palazzo dei Consoli and the Torti Theatre is considered one of the most beautiful of the Umbria region.

But the most renowned centre along the Sagrantino road is Montefalco with its exceptional view over Spoleto, Trevi, Foligno, Spello and Assisi. The town structure, comprised inside the 14th century walls, has been conceived in such a way that all the streets lead to the Municipality square. There are many historical and artistic masterpieces to see, like the cycle of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli preserved in the former church of San Francesco, today the Civic Museum. And the passion for wine, for ages rooted in the culture of Montefalco, expresses itself today with a series of specific events, the most attractive being the Wine week. This event takes place every year during the second half of June and includes many initiatives: exhibitions of local wines, tasting workshops, guided visits in the cellars and encounters with experts (for information, consult of the Municipality of Montefalco).
