Photographer's Note
The Gokyo Lakes are a series of alpine lakes at an altitude between about 4,600 and 5,000m not far from Mt. Everest, in Nepal. These lakes were considered sacred by the mountain peoples of Nepal and Tibet (a few kilometres away) for their great beauty, and to swim in them is considered very inappropriate (if one was tempted to swim here in the subzero temperatures that is). In the very height of winter these lakes partially freeze over. This is lake 3 in the series of 5 lakes in a chain of semi-connected lakes in the region and the water is the result of snowfalls off the surrounding peaks. The stone piles are found here in their thousands, and serve as memorials to the ancestors of locals and foreign visitors alike. Nearby is a small mountain called Gokyo Ri (around 5,350m) which gives superb views of the lakes, and four 8,000+ metre tall mountains.

Hi Matthew. There is something special about the light in this rarefied air. The colours look crisp and the details much more apparent. Of course much of this is due to excellent photographic skills.Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Matt
A tough shot, I think I would prefer the view without the foreground you have chosen, but what I can see is this canadian rockie like glacier water with it's incredible colourings. The blue sky suggest the freshest of days where your lungs would exhilarate after the walk to here. Sharpness and DOF look bang on here.

Hi Matthew,
Nice shot..the blue tones work really well here, emphasizing the cold. The light is beautiful and while the piles of stones appear distracting at first, they are the essence of the story you are telling...well done!

Hello Matthew,
The colors, as much as the spectacular mountain range in the background grab the eye, but then there are the stones, stacked with regular spacing. Around the fjords of Norway, one sees stones stacked in similar fashion, but they are mementos of individuals who've visited. I wonder what minerals exist in the water that give it this aqua tint.
Regards and enjoy the weekend,
Bulent

Hi Matthew!
Very nice! A great shot of an alpine lake, but obviously knowing where it is makes it all that much more special! Perfect control of the light here, with great dof too! Great notes and a gorgeous landscape! Warm regards,
Steve

Hi Matt.
An astounding scene. What a colour that water is! This one is so sharp and brilliant, and a very good exposure of all those whites. Hard to believe this lake is about twice the altitude of the top of our highest Australian mountain. One can imagine how cold the water is at this height. Fantastic rock formations, too. Great photo.
Regards,
Andrew
PS thanks for the compliments about my last photo!

Hi Matthew - Fabulous colour and light management in this spectacular landscape. I like the inclusion of the piled rocks in the foreground, they tell us people inhabit the area - (your notes add further info on them.I can understand why people would consider the lakes sacred and visiting them must surely be a very spiritual experience. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Matt
a wonderful view of this magnificent place, all the elements are working for you here. Love the little drift of snow in the foreground, and the two shades of blue, they contrast perfectly. Excellent image!

Hi Matthew,
a beautiful view of this mountain lake surrounded by mountains.
The color of water is amazing, perhaps it is reflecting the blue of the sky.
Great sharpness.

Hello Matthew
Wonderful picture! The turquoise water of the l;ake is an excellent backdrop. These stone piles are called 'chortens', if I remember well & create a good FG depth. The mist/low clouds hugs the mountain slope. Excellent!
Best,
Angshu
