Photographer's Note
Merak is a city and seaport on the northwestern tip of Java Island in Indonesia. The port and town are named after the Green Peafowl (peacock), which once lived in the region, but is now very rare. In 1883, the original settlement was completely destroyed by 41 m high tsunami generated by the eruption of volcano on Krakatau Island. Today more than 40 petrochemical plants operate near the seaport. Fishing is not allowed near petrochemical plants but local fishermen do not always follow this restriction. The people who actually crew the boats like this on the picture are often poor fishermen who are depending on daily catch even in restricted waters.

Hello Miro, this is an excellent contrast man against nature. Great shot with the small fishing boat in foreground and the huge petrochemical plant in background.

Hi Miro,
Thanks for the note that compliments this picture so well. The background of the chemical places is so futuristic, but the boat humanizes the whole thing and makes it a fascinating image. Wonderful composition as well, I love how you have placed the boat and captured the detail of so many fishermen on board.
Best wishes
Noel

I like the strong contrast between that petrochemical plant and these fishermen pulling the nets
Not sure that the water quality is good in that place..
Thanks Miro and all the best

Hello Miro,
The petro-chemical plant is in contrast to the old traditional fishing boat croosed the bay area.
Industrial complexes near ports is common almost everywhere, and makes me think of how much they "contributed" to the fishermen livelihood when polluting the surrounding.
Nice shot, good clear details,
Ike

Hi, Miro,
I think the old photos has got more value,
Very interesting capture of the old traditional fishermen boat with so industrial background... I think this is not the best idea to catch fish near the oil tanks. Although I am not expert, perhaps they have high ecologic standarts.
Thanks for so actual report.
Best wishes,
SSerghei
