Photographer's Note

Purple Gallinule (Prophyrio porphyrio) 46cm: Unmistakeable large size, massive red bill and frontal shield, red legs and toes, combined with the general purplish coloration and turquoise neck and breast. Habitat is reedbeds, sedge marshes, and flooded grassland. It makes a variety of harsh shrieks, wails and booming notes. (Afrikaans name is "Grootkoringriethaan")

I think that the photo can definitely be improved, but this bird is way too interesting not to post. This was shot at 500mm (750mm on the D100) on an overcast day, so it was quite difficult to get good photos.

The really good photos got away, due to most of them being blurred, a cluttered background, bad focus, and so on. I watched this bird dig out a root with its big bill and feet. Then it took the root to the water, washed it, and ate it. It was quite impressive to watch it holding the root in that huge claw!
