Clashing Colours, a photo from Eastern Cape, West

Photographer's Note

A shot from the quiet village of Storm’s River in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Home to the popular Marilyn’s Diner the colour clashing paintwork on some of the buildings shout so loudly one cannot help but be drawn to them.
High contrast or complementary colours that are opposite one another on the colour wheel may be described as clashing colours. Colours that clash are not necessarily a bad combination, they are very high contrast, high visibility pairings popularly used in graphic design and advertising.

Hello Rosemary,
You could hardly call the paintwork 'quiet'! Still, it makes for a great photo opportunity. Well framed graphical composition, nicely lit with excellent saturated colours.

Le propriétaire de cette boutique ne manque certainement pas d'imagination au niveau des mélanges de couleurs, par contre, cela ne semble pas trop invitant. J'aime le cadrage serré qui élimine les détails inutiles.

gran bella foto! Colore in gran quantità e soggetto molto grazioso. Sei stata anche brava nel gestire la luce riuscendo a ridurre al minimo il contrasto tra luce ed ombra.

Hi Rosemary,
A great eyecatcher to say the least, these colours are very bold and striking and very appealing! I would imagine trade would be brisk at this place! The light and shade on the wall adds another element too, as it breaks the purple and greens into even more colours. Nicely seen, this is a shot that would make me smile!

I love this one, Rosemary - incredibly vibrant colors, as befits a 'Rock 'n' Roll Store'! Seems maybe they've had an issue keeping all their neon lights attached, though!

I retract on my previous private comment - you are not one of the best contemporaneous landscape photographers but one of the best overall. I have been looking hard at this image to see where I could fault it or what improvements I could make but none at all. This is such a striking image and it sticks. I am not at all surprised that it is attracting so much favourable comment. Very well done once again.

Rosemary, definitely hurts the eyes. Even if the building itself hadn't been purple, it would hurt the eyes! And that is quite a collection of things that it sells. Nicely exposed and very well cropped. Thanks.

Hello Rosemary,

As soon as I saw this and read your note, I was reminded of an old (and rather rude) joke in which, essentially, someone comments very adversely on the food he is given to eat but ends by saying that it was "perfectly and beautifully cooked".

So it is with your picture. The colours of this building are, quite frankly, hideous but you have portrayed them absolutely perfectly in your photograph! And, as you say, the juxtaposition of such colours does certainly draw the eye and the attention to this building.

I'm not so sure if complementary colours always do "clash" - think, for example, of a blue sea or sky against yellow sand of a beach - they are complementary colours and they look good together - i.e. they complement each other - despite being opposite each other on the "colour wheel".

Anyway, to your photograph. It is well composed and nicely balanced, it certainly shows these weird colours off vibrantly, the oblique light across the face of the building is delightful and, as always, your exposure is spot-on and your details and sharpness exquisite.

Ouch, those colors really hurt the eye, but create at the same time a gorgeous contrast that no photographer can pass by. The deep saturated colors work really well here.

The tight framing is perfect to bring all the elements out and enhances the strenght of the colours.

Yes, here it is...this makes me happy to see it once again! :) I noticed this back when it was first posted and regretted not taking the time to comment, and was disappointed that I let it get away. The colors and textures are what caught my attention, and in a big way...what a great find and presentation. There is so much to enjoy about this picture, all of which is exemplified by a smashing composition. This really packs a punch, compliments on an outstanding image!
