Photographer's Note

We visited this little town last year and was surprised to see how the people of Orania had built themselves a town in only 16 years. In December 1990, about 40 Afrikaner families, headed by Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of former South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd,( see below) bought the dilapidated town for around US$200 000.

Orania is located along the Orange River in the arid Karoo region of its Northern Cape province. It is the first existing realisation of the Volkstaat concept (indeed, Orania is at the easternmost point of an earlier proposed Volkstaat area in the Northern Cape province) and is unique among South African towns in being the only all-Afrikaner enclave in South Africa.

Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd (Amsterdam, 8 September 1901 – Cape Town, 6 September 1966) was Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. Unlike his predecessors, Verwoerd was not born in South Africa, but immigrated at age two with his parents from the Netherlands.
