Photographer's Note

Erg Chebbi is like a bit of the Algerian Sahara that somehow got detached and travelled into Moroccan territory. It's a sand island in the rock desert. If you look at the satellite image (click on "map view" and zoom out), you'll see what I mean. It's very easily accessible and the 'island' sensation is very evident when you actually drive towards it. There's a huge expanse of flat rocky desert and, suddenly, the reddish sand dunes begin to rise at one point. This image gives you some idea. Of course if you've been there you know exactly what I'm talking about.
