Photographer's Note
A young boy in Timbuktu is returning home late in the afternoon with his donkey loaded with firewood he had collected somewhere outside the city.
It's a far from perfect photo, mainly because it was taken in a difficult light and probably not perfectly exposed. Today's WS #1 suffers from the same problem. But in both cases I can assure you these scans are incomparably much better than those I originally made several years ago. But even this time I had to do a lot of post-processing to make them reasonably acceptable for TE. I show them despite their deficiencies, because I like them.
I already posted a number of photos from Timbuktu years ago. In my present West African series I show pictures I had either just overlooked earlier, or photos that were originally so badly scanned that I couldn't possibly show them.
WS #1, which is another not perfect personal favourite, shows more animals. WS #2 shows an ordinary Timbuktu street and a couple of chickens.
All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides. So was this one, which I posted here many years ago, and which was clearly also taken on an afternoon:

Hello Gert,
There is a slight lighting problem but for a photograph taken long ago and scanned, for me, it was well worth being shared.
The impression is of scenes, which I might have expected to see, had I been around in Biblical Times. Apart from the differences in some clothes, not much seems to have altered.
This donkey is certainly earning its keep.
At least the boy isn't riding it, too, a scene I have witnessed before where the poor animal was expected to carry a huge load and the owner!
It's a very well composed photograph, the boy and donkey completely filling the f/g, with enough b/g details to get a sense of place.
The photograph of the lady and child continues this impression of an arid land and a hard life.
The street scene is very much like other African streets that you have recently posted. The shadows probably very welcome.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour, cher Gert,

Hi Gert,
You have captured well a daily life scene. The poimt of view is showing the details of the donkey and of its load. The light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Gert,
Your West African photos also show trees. But I wonder if there is enough firewood to gather for the people who live in the Sahel ...
This boy has indeed collected a lot of wood on the back of the donkey. Could this be the work of one day? And how long will this supply last?
In the WS we see a street with a full tree felled. But deforestation will increase desertification rapidly.
The second photo in the WS shows surprisingly large shadows. The houses and trees don't seem that high to me. So the sun had to be just above the horizon.
Very attractive pictures from everyday life.
Best regards, Paul

Hej Gert,
Det stakkels æsel som skal bære så meget træ, men det synes at udføre sit arbejde uden at klage. Et godt billede med æslet og drengen ved siden af hinanden. De varme sollys fra venstre side er meget fint og danner smukke mønstre i sandet.

Dear Gert,
Again, you are humble and underestimate your skills as a photographer. Its quite a decent photo, I would be proud to give my name for it. The lights and the colours are wonderful and the overall quality s also hits the standards. I will fave it risking that I will reach the ceiling some day...
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Gert, with the shadows, we get the impression that this is the end of a long day. It was quite an achievement to get that load of wood onto the back of the donkey!
I wonder how far the boy had to walk to collect all this wood?
There are trees in your pictures, but few and far between.
I like the scene with the mother, her goats and her child, one can almost imagine her telling the child to hurry up.
Excellent pictures for TE, showing a place that has probably changed considerably.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Gert, no gas cookers and ceramic plates existed at this time in Toubouctou, so people use to collect firewood for cooking. This practice added to the cattle, the goats, the sheeps overgrazing has contributed to the desertification in the area. Some Ngos promote and install solar kitchens in various places in Sahel. They provide renewable energy to the populations and slow down the trees cutting. The three pictures show the hardness of the daily life. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello Gert, we were neighbours yesterday, it happens rather rarely, it takes me quite a time to upload the picture in the "zero" hour.
Lovely all pictures, I understand the favourite is this one with the nice girl and an overloaded donkey. I do not care fro the not perfect quality, as you know. I looked also at previous pictures from Mali. The amusing text under the linked one: "That was less than 30 years ago, so it's not really very old".
Charming scene.

Hello Gert,
In spite of what you say in your note, I have nothing but admiration for your very considerable scanning and processing skills, particularly in the cases of your main photograph and workshop #1. Both of those photographs were taken very much "contre jour" in extremely strong sunlight and even the very best and most expensive modern day digital cameras would struggle to cope with such huge contrasts in light levels. And Kodachrome, while a wonderful medium, did, like all diapositive emulsions, have a very narrow exposure latitude and was very contrasty at the best of times.
So what I am saying is that you have done extremely, almost impossibly, well to bring back detail not only in the bright areas lit directly by the sun but also in those areas like the boy's face, the bundle of firewood and the donkey's face - all of which I can imagine appeared almost completely black on your original slide.
Anyway, after all that preamble, these are three lovely photographs of which your main one must be my favourite, closely followed by workshop #1 of the lady and her goats being followed by her little trainee goatherd. The wide street in workshop #2 is not of a particularly attractive scene (and not so endearing to me as was Bobo) - but I do like your earlier "Children of Timbuktu, 1982".
And, of course, a fascinating note as always.
Splendid!
Kind Regards,
John.

I'm glad you didn't decide to keep these photos in a box because of minor and insignificant imperfections of lighting and exposure.
I wonder if life has changed a lot from the time when you visited.
Probably not.
