Photographer's Note
Here is another scanned black and white photo of low technical quality but which I nevertheless personally like. Those of you who like grainy photos may also enjoy it.
This is from a street in Timbuktu (Tombouctou), the legendary desert city in northern Mali, almost exactly 35 years ago, in February 1982. I have no memory of meeting these men but obviously I was fascinated by their ancient appearance and snapped a quick photo before they had time to say no. I think I was especially impressed by the long sword that the man in the middle is carrying. Looking at them now they make me think of the three magi, "wise men", of the Bible.
I regret that the photo is divided by an electricity pole. I made a copy where I erased it but although the rehabilitated donkey looked fairly okay it wasn't good enough.
In the early 1980's Timbuktu was starting to attract tourists who were anxious to visit what had been one of the great cities of Islamic learning during the European Middle ages. I suspect that most people were disappointed to find a dry and dusty city with relatively few remaining landmarks of importance. In recent years Timbuktu has been strictly off the tourist track after being taken by Islamic terrorist militias. Today the city is back under government control and protected by UN troops, but it is still a very unsafe place to visit. A Swedish tourist was seized by an al-Qaeda affiliated group five years ago and is still kept hostage somewhere in the desert, along with a South African man.
There is another photo from Timbuktu in a workshop. Both photos were scanned from Ilford FP4 negatives. Here is a larger version of the main photo.

Hi Gert,2 great memories today too, from a city that now isn't possible to visit because the unsafe moment as i know and as i can read in your note too. Lovely scene in the main post,no problem for the electric pole and for the quality, and the WS is beautiful too with the men under this very curious and old tree, well done as usual! Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gert,
I am not at all concern with old scanned photo quality, I can accept the fact that years ago technology did not have the ability of present era.
So, assuming the time past - this is a marvelous document from a remote town and country, not many of us would never visit.
Both men were very interested at you with the camera, and the other "half", the donkeys appearing busy with one and the other.
I appreciate the many old pictures you have in your albums, please do not hesitate to show them all.
have a nice Sunday,
Ike

Hello Gert,
When I was growing up my father often referred to Timbuktu for one reason and another; I used to think it was a place he had made up, somewhere exotic and far away. The electricity pole although slightly annoying nicely separates the men from their animals. The scene has the allure of an old stereograph picture much loved by the Victorians. The graininess is perfectly acceptable and contributes to the mood.

Hi Gert
Superb daily life scene (from the place I would like to visit... you know that...). The compositional juxtaposition of the people and the donkeys works so well.
It's meant to be grainy - that's the best way to show the adobe wall in the background.
The WS photo is also very nice. I have never seen a tree like this. It looks as if it had been made to grow that way to create this natural spot of shade.
Have a nice Sunday

Hello Gert,
I quite like this grainy, B&W photo, it goes particularly well together with the texture of the wall, which is a great background for this daily life view of the group of men looking at you and the two donkeys on the left hand side.

Bonjour, cher ami Gert,
J'aime ces photos reportage relatant une époque, une façon de vivre, loin de tout modernisme actuel.
Ces deux images reflètent une réalité, sans fard, ni flagornerie.
Merci.

Hi Gert,
Lucky you - I wonder if I would ever get to visit this place! I hope you will share with us more photos from here.
In grainy look suits B&W, and I must say that this is really a very interesting composition with the subjects well placed and in interesting postures!

Hi Gert
a good remark concerning the 3 wise men of the Bible, and also concerning this disturbing post, could have been replaced by a tree trunk.
Nevertheless, a good "street" photography

Une de tes plus belles tirées de tes archives en noir et blanc. Elle raconte une histoire et elle a aussi beaucoup de caractère. Un poteau qui sépare parfaitement l'image en deux.

Hello Gert,
I don't mind the pole at all, it divides the scene in two sections, the one with the people staring back is intense and captivating, the part with the donkeys is amusing and provides some "comic relief". I like very much how the bright and the dark areas stand out in a bright, gritty but silvery setting. The suggestion about the Magi is wonderful. I also like the busier scene in the workshop. So sad and worried that life has changed in this part of the world so much. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hello Gert,
A very interesting picture. If the pole were to split the photo you would get 2 wonderful photos of the men in their desertlike garb and the other of the donkeys. You got them both in one take.
cheers,

Hej Gert,
Snygg bild men tydligt bearbetad. Åsnorna till vänster ser tämligen "platta" ut , konstig kontrast. Männen har ju något tydligare kontrast. Också en intressant extrabild med ett synnerligen konstigt träd.

Hi Gert
yikes, STILL held captive? I wonder if they're still alive, man thats terrible not only for them but for their families not knowing what's going on.
the WS photo is just as nice, if not even better. love that weird bent tree.
here the men are the main attractions in their attire and swords. Interesting to see the mud-wall in the bg too.
You don't see scenes like this here in Canada I can tell you that much! haha

Hej Gert
Not the best scan quality, but that doesn't mean the picture doesn't deserve being posted here. The position of the three men is terrific, great how the two donkeys balance them out at the other side of the pole.
Excellent note too.

Hello Gert,
I tried to clone the electricity pole but what to do with the leg of the donkey? They look like the three kings. And they look a bit suspiciously at you, maybe they noticed your camera, or they just saw the white man. What they use the sword for? . Nice two donkeys and sheep. I like also the Workshop picture. What an amazing tree you show there. Another place not possible to see.
Have a nice week

Hello Gert,
I just love the title which adds a touch of humour, like something from the "Life of Brian' as the very suspicious-looking kings eye the camera! The donkeys add to the humour, not quite the majestic camels, with golden saddle cloths!
Having said that it tells so much about the local dress and the arid conditions.
It is so sad that many places, once interesting destinations, are no longer safe to visit. It is devastating for the economies of places once buoyed by tourism.
Thank you for your w/s too.
The idea of a stall under a protective tree is so sensible!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi, Gert.
Fantastic photo of report, this place so remote, now outside of every visitable route .... very curious men's clothes, a style of Tuareg dress, seem to look at you with great attention. The two donkeys are an ideal complement.
Good brightness and sharpness.
Well done. I like.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.

Hello Gert,
I really like this picture and the placement of the three men and the animals nicely on a row in front of the mud wall.
I have the impression these three wise men don't look overly inviting but I may be wrong.
Personally I don't think the electricity pole is a disturbing element on the picture.
As for the donkeys: They both take a really nice position.
But it was best not to argue too much with the man with the sword.
In the workshop we find the most odd shaped tree I've ever seen. In itself a reason to take the picture.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert,
This is an attractive and exotic photo. With the animals, and the traditional clothes, it could very well be a Biblical scene. One donkey seems to be very fond of the other one, which is sweet. I don't mind the grain or the pole in the middle either. :-)

Hello Gert
Three wise men certainly are needed in this region. Maybe the donkeys can symbolise the dumb powers that are responsible for the unstable and inhuman situation nowadays.
I that case the electric lamppost is the symbol for the separation of the population and the evil powers.
Have a nice day

First of all I have read your note, and I can say once again this is not the best place for travelling today. So you was a lucky tourist if you had visit this country in peaceful 1982.

Hello Gert,
Splendid tonal range here with clean whites and solid blacks on account of the good density levels and exposure settings. The pole almost splits the image in 2 with the donkeys at left and the men at right. Tfs!
