Photographer's Note
I remain in the distant past, this time in 1982.
This is from a town called Goundam in northern Mali, several hours' journey southwest of the more famous city of Timbuktu. I travelled to Goundam only to catch a flight to Mopti, much further south, and spent a day and a night there. I have rarely felt more lost and bewildered anywhere, mainly because there was no place to have a meal, and by the time of the day I arrived there wasn't even a piece of bread left. The water provided at the hostel for drinking and washing was taken straight from the river and had to be boiled very long to be safe.
I have very vague memories of Goundam and I don't remember anything from taking this photo. Obviously the women are on their way to find water a long way from home.
What I do remember very clearly was how I managed to leave Goundam. I had an open ticket for the flight and went to the Air Mali office to book a seat for the next day. I was told that if I arrived at the office at 9 AM I could get a free ride to the airstrip. When I asked if they shouldn't get in touch with Bamako to check if there was a seat available, I was assured there was no need for that. I was guaranteed a seat.
So the next day I got the free ride to the airstrip, where we eventually were about a dozen men waiting with our luggage. Finally the plane landed, the French pilot stepped out and walked up to our little group. He looked at us through his dark glasses, then said: "I have three empty seats. You, you and you. Bring your luggage and come with me. The rest of you can go home". He pointed at two local VIP-looking men and one white man. Me.
That was how I was saved from staying another week without food or water in Goundam.
This is only the second photo on TE from Goundam. By coincidence the first one was also one of mine.
Here is a larger version of today's upload. It was, as usual, scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Golden sand-dunes, and a mud-made castle rising from. A beautiful old pic., I could had accepted that as a digital photo, Gert.
Bright light, which is normal in deserts.
My best regards,

Hello Gert,
your previous picture from Goundam was probably the first time I ever heard of it. I appreciate another chance to have a glimpse at this place as it was back then, it looks so exotic in my eyes. Your picture is superb, the scene looks simple but is full of surprises, like the fresh green tree in the desert, the imposing structure on the dune and the ladies, who have climbed down half of the dune and suddenly stopped to stare back at the strangers. The colours and the subtle shadows confirm the word exotic that has stuck to my mind. Your note is fascinating too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Bonsoir,cher ami Gert,
Merci pour cette présentation de Goudam et des personnages menant une vie difficile. L'image remontant à 1982, cette dernière est excellente ; la numérisation n'est pas toujours exemplaire.
Un vrai travail de reporter.

Hello Gert,
I can only imagine how miserable you felt here with little to drink and nothing to eat and with no guarantee of being able to leave this place the following day, but, having now just read your note on the first of the only two photographs here from Goundam, I see that you did actually have the option of buying some fly-infested meat or rotten vegetables! And how fortunate you were to be chosen to travel on that 'plane next day.
Presumably this picture was taken from outside the town's walls and you have cleverly used what is probably the tallest part of the town's defences to frame the left side of the image perfectly, making the extensive area of bare sand fill the rest of the frame and give a wonderful feeling of isolation - also accentuated by the presence of two tiny figures.
Considering that this is a scan of an old colour slide, the light and colours are exceptionally good as are the details and sharpness.
And, as always, a fabulously interesting and informative note.
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Ciao Gert

Hello Gert,
I saw this thumbnail, and I knew it was your photo before even looking at your name. :-) Such an exotic locale, with the harsh sandy landscape, and impressive structure in the background. I like the two figures walking with what look like pots on their heads. Once again, your note is also fascinating.

Hello Gert.
A beautiful photo with many years of existence, very well captured and scanned now, the image shows a scene from the deepest Africa, with the two women possibly carrying water on her head, for that steep dune, curious construction we see the bottom .
Magnificent management brightness and sharpness.
Very well seen and well taken.
Have a nice day.
Best wishes.

Hi Gert
Perfect combination of complementary colours, the photo is filled with yellow sand and blue sky. The two women look almost lost in this vast landscape, dwarfed by the expanse of the desert and the buildings (adobe?) in the distance.
Thank you for yet another image from what, technically, is one of my favourite countries - btw, I've done some research and it appears that the south of Mali is fairly safe to travel... :-) Not Timbuktu though...
Greetings from the train to work. It's sunrise time in south London.

Hello Gert,
As always, an engaging narrative.
I remember your first shot and the same emotions overcame me when I read your notes and perused this photograph!
It can be quite distressing to be away from familiar places and people but when faced with the prospect of no available food and WORSE, no available water, it must be difficult to keep positive! Without the prospect of an immediate flight out, you must have been at a low ebb!
Like all good stories, fortunately, there was a happy ending!
This photograph does not paint such a forgotten place as your first one. It's a very well composed photograph with figures immediately adding interest, especially when carrying water on their heads!
It is an amazingly well scanned slide the colours being so true.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert
Nice image - it is composed carefully and has an almost painting like quality to it. Your note was interesting it reminded me of time I spent in the Sinai desert in Israel with one bottle of water to last me for a day. When I met up with some people who had water I had to wait while a little boy hitched with a jerry can to the next town to bring back water the next day. I have never been so thirsty in my life since.
Cheers
Mike

Hi Gert
This capture adds a sense of scale with excellent contrast to the imposing element in the background while those stark figs draw the eye in and invite it to explore.
A fairly decent coloured image well taken, Congrats.

Hi Gert
I'm impressed with how many African Countries you've travelled to, I know times were different 30 years ago, but its still pretty darn cool. With today's environment, many African nations are just completely off limits.
However, you never know...for example I remember even a decade ago it was unthinkable to travel to many South American countries...now many of them are tourist hot spots.
incredible story! here is a prime example of how a note can make all the difference. I too, try to often provide a funny story or funny thought, or some sort of experience in my notes.
of course i'm going to notice the architecture on the left, its very interesting looking in its design. Wish we could see more of it.
perhaps following the 2 women would be a good idea to locate food!
great TE post all around
cheers

Hello Gert,
I've met more travelers with very unusual stories about flying in Mali.
The town walls of Goundam fit perfectly with the surrounding desert landscape. But since I see trees on the picture, I guess this isn't the desert, probably the Sahel ...
Life for these women is presumably not as fun, go far from home to get the indispensable water and that each and every day.
The picture is well composed and I really like that blue-yellow-green combination.
Best regards, Paul

You were very brave to travel to parts unknown, I don't think I could have done it. At least you survived to write about your experience. Beautiful image to go with your story and yes, the dunes can change in matter hours from strong wind and very easy place to get lost. Good pov and nice details. The women provided scale. Well done, tfs.

Hi Gert,
so were treated like a real VIP person. I was at that time 10 years old I remember this year though because I watched World Cup in Football which was organized in Spain. At that time Polish team was very good so it was very emotional to follow their achievements.
Lovely composition with some architecture and sand dune and women carrying some vessels on their head. You must have seen a lot in your life.

Gert, the building made in mud forms a splendid background. The life is hard in the desert due to the lack of water and the heat, the inhabitants like carrying everything on their heads while walking. Only some rare thorny plants succeed in growing in that hostile environment. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.
