Photographer's Note

As I said in my posting of the lion in the same game park in Kenya (Masai Maara), the dominant sensation here is one of loneliness, of a yellow-grassed desert, where occasional herds of zebras might pass your way, but most of all you'd see grass and more grass, all around you.

Once in a while, you'd see a baobob tree, and this type of tree has always intrigued me. Why would a creator choose to make a tree this unusual? Why is it there, so vulnerable, in this desert of space? I was filled with this sense of awe for God that can only come from being in a place so empty of life. And it is this feeling that I wanted to convey to you, because it is the feeling that pervades any game park visit.

On another tangent, I feel that the aim of art is to try to imitate the beauty of the earth around us. It is almost as if we are all copycats of the greatest artist ever. Art that catches our breath is art that really captures what nature is, to show it honestly, to give it a mirror to hold.
